It’s compelling to watch the filmmaker, and lead actor, express their ideas of what might have happened to get Heath Ledger from charming, handsome, romantic lead all the way over to his memorable performance as the unhinged Joker. Regardless of whether those ideas are accurate, you still get to see Stiaan Smith go on that journey to find himself at the same end point, and he is quite convincing…

It’s a film with an intriguing idea at its core, if not one that seems to offer much concrete context; the audience is left to do quite a bit of interpretation, and I can imagine some running wild with the option, while others just remaining confused…

While I did find my mind wandering in the middle, I was never really bored with the film. Trying to figure out what the film was getting at with certain characters and situations allows you to run with the narrative in a number of directions beyond the obvious, and that offers an extra level of engagement…

The film plays itself up like folklore, complete with the omniscient narration from the reporter, whose voice sometimes reminds you of Morgan Freeman’s soothing otherworldliness. The stage is set for something epic, but the film doesn’t entirely deliver…
