EUROTRIP

4 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 92 minutes

IN THEATERS! The cast takes what it gives them and goes all the way. They’re not afraid to take risks, and in many ways carry the movie better than so many seasoned veterans I’ve seen in the past years. In a way, “Eurotrip” has that slim chance of living on as a classic in the same way that “Animal House,” “Porky’s” or “Revenge of the Nerds” did…

50 FIRST DATES

4 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 106 minutes

IN THEATERS! If you like romantic comedies, “50 First Dates” is definitely going to push your buttons. It’s a great date movie, and appropriately opens to the Valentine’s Day weekend. It’s one of the better films Sandler’s done since his last on-screen pairing with Barrymore in “The Wedding Singer…”

BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 116 minutes

IN THEATERS! Ice Cube has a certain presence that is actually quite warm and charming when he’s not trying to be a badass…

CATCH THAT KID

2.5 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: PG
Running Time: 102 minutes

IN THEATERS! In some ways, “Catch That Kid” is trying to ride the “Agent Cody Banks” and “Spy Kids” popularity wave, but it misses the mark a bit. But “Catch That Kid” is a more down-to-earth plot without the evil madman trying to take over the world – and the high-tech angle just doesn’t work as well here…

CHASING LIBERTY

2.5 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 111 minutes

As much as I appreciate a nude scene with Mandy Moore, the not-so-subtle cinematic trick of her taking off her top and just showing her back (or more likely the back of a body double) was overused…

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (DVD)

4 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: G
Running Time: 75 minutes

Back in my childhood, the voice of Winnie the Pooh would never be the same. The Queen of Hearts running around screaming, “Off with her head!” didn’t make things much better…

THE BIG BOUNCE

2 Stars
Year Released: 2004
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 108 minutes

IN THEATERS! “The Big Bounce” is an Elmore Leonard crime caper in the tradition of films like “Get Shorty,” “Out of Sight” and “Jackie Brown.” It contains the familiar slate of characters that are basically criminals and lowlifes but have a healthy dose of charm…

FREAKY FRIDAY (DVD)

3 Stars
Year Released: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG
Running Time: 100 minutes

Without a commentary there’s not too much of a reason to get the DVD over the VHS or even for someone outside of the target demographic to watch it…

TORQUE

3 Stars
Year Released: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 100 minutes

IN THEATERS! Now, if you think I’m a pig because I’m basing the worth of a movie like “Torque” on physical features of the actors, you need to realize what type of movie this is…

THE BATTLE OF SHAKER HEIGHTS (DVD)

1.5 Stars
Year Released: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 79 minutes

CATCH KYLE RANKIN AND EFRAM POTELLE IN PARK CITY! If the box office disappointment wasn’t enough to clue you in on Miramax’s lack of confidence in this film, then the complete absence of even the tiniest extra features on the DVD is enough to make that clearly apparent…

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 127 minutes

IN THEATERS! Ultimately, the biggest sins in “The Return of the King” arise from Peter Jackson’s ego, which prevented him from editing the movie to a reasonable length…

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (DVD)

4 Stars
Year Released: 2003
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 127 minutes

It is a little depressing to see such a heavy emphasis on Jerry Bruckheimer in the special features. There seems to be struggle behind the scenes. Was this a Disney film? Or was it a Jerry Bruckheimer film? After all, Jerry Bruckheimer’s high-octane action films are about as un-Disney as they get…
