FANTASIA FILMS: LA TERZA MADRE, [*REC], LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, WHAT WE DO IS SECRET

FANTASIA FILMS: LA TERZA MADRE, [*REC], LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, WHAT WE DO IS SECRET

Hung around with Mitch Davis and Doug Buck yesterday, talked movies over food at an outdoor cafe on Crescent street. I like Buck, he’s a really smart, insightful guy. Mitch likewise is always a blast to talk to. What I like best about Mitch is that he ain’t no fanboy, but a proper film buff. Someone who loves film in and of itself. I admire that.

Of the films I’ve currently seen [*Rec] is lot of a fun. It’s a Spanish reality horror film about zombies that is as good as anything Romero or Boyle have done, but it’s also the type of film that you watch once and then don’t really need to see ever again. It’s not that it’s bad, far from it, but it’s popcorn. Good for a snack, bad for a meal. After that, I saw the staggeringly beautiful “Let The Right One In”, a vampire story of such sweetness that half the women in the audience were sniffing when the credits rolled. I wasn’t sniffling obviously, I only had something in my eye.

Lastly, I finished the night with “What We Do is Secret” which was awesome. I still say that Shane West looks too old to play Darby Crash, but apart from that it’s an exacting recreation of a time that’s almost been forgotten; and West is really really good as Crash. During the audience Q&A, some dipshit started babbling that the film got it “wrong” which is something that only an 18 year old screamo fan who wouldn’t know what punk is if it bit her on the cunt would say. Yeah, it was a girl, probably the only reason why half the audience didn’t drag her outside and beat seven kinds of shit out of her. She was not popular to say the least and she left in a little huff.

After that, went to a hardcore themed party at “Le Social” and talked to the director of What We Do… He’s a good guy, you can tell he loves his work and that deep down inside he’s still a punk. He’s kind of like me, he’s gotten older and he’s calmed down quite a bit, but he’s still got that glint in his eye you know? Cool dude. We talked music, and I can assure you that he knows his shit. He didn’t make the movie for any other reason than because he loves them era and doesn’t want it to fade away into irrelevance.

Oh, and the day before yesterday I saw Dario Argento’s “Mother of Tears”. I’ll have a review up, but all I can say now is that I’m glad that this isn’t part 3 in the “Three Mothers” trilogy. Yeah yeah, I know it is, but let’s pretend it isn’t. How’s that? Let’s pretend that Argento still has another good movie in him. That will let me sleep better at night.

No, I disagree. I saw [REC] three times and it was excellent all three times.
