YELLOW

![]() Year Released: 2013 MPAA Rating: Unrated Running Time: 105 minutes minutes |
2013 SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SELECTION! I’m still not 100% sure I liked “Yellow.” but it sure did give me a lot to think about, and to me, that makes it time well spent…

DIE YOUNG

The strength to the piece is that universality of emotion, even if the actions may not be the go-to answer for most. I would’ve handled the situation differently, but I have the hindsight of someone who survived their youth (insomuch that I could be considered an adult now) and my stresses, while seemingly epic at the time, were never so daunting as I imagined…

LOVELOCK, CA

![]() Year Released: 2011 MPAA Rating: Unrated Running Time: 20 minutes |
Be that as it may, I strongly recommend that all critically thinking adults view “Lovelock, CA” as soon as possible. This movie will not only shake loose any resistant ideals you may have buried, but it will also create endless discussions of the most provocative variety for years to come.

A CERTAIN KIND OF MONSTER

![]() Year Released: 2013 MPAA Rating: Unrated Running Time: 22 minutes |
The plot in “A Certain Kind of Monster” appears to be the norm these days, but in spite of this, Mike Moring handles his tale deftly, so that suspense is always high and unwavering. This of course, keeps our attention constant, even when we clearly see where the story’s heading, and its outcome.

While one or two jumps like these are often enough in a feature length movie, and numerous scenes such as these are absolutely inexcusable in even the most experimental of mini-short films, somehow or other we’re willing to forgive Kvanbeck, and accept whatever he sends our way, because of his ability to hold and suspend our attention at all times.

RENOIR
|
|
![]() Year Released: 2012 MPAA Rating: R Running Time: 111 minutes |
The movie’s a compilation of lifeless sequences in which the painter dashes off masterpieces amid picture perfect surroundings. We learn nothing about his life or oeuvre and anyone seeking psychological insight must make do with fromage such as “You can’t explain a painting-you have to feel it.” The filmmaker offers a portrait of the artist as an old fart because he’s chosen to portray him during the least dynamic phase of his life…
