COORDINATED FILM

2 Stars
Year Released: 2012
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 38 minutes

Shot with a Fisher-Price PXL-2000 toy camera, the footage is black and white and pixelated often to the point that the imagery is ridiculously challenging to discern. Still, enough comes through to follow along…

THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO

4.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 73 minutes

The only problem I had with “The Search for General Tso,” and it’s something many of us experience eating Chinese-American food, was that an hour after watching it I was hungry to view it again…

DOROTHY MARIE AND THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS OF THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

2 Stars
Year Released: 2013

While examples exist throughout indie film of features sustained primarily by small casts in a single location, this is not one where they pull it off…

HOMESPUN REBELLION

2.5 Stars
Year Released: 2013
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 65 minutes

Passionate, excitable, perhaps too indelicate in some respects, but well-intentioned, Simolaris is the guy keeping his eyes on the local government, and reporting back what he sees in an effort to keep things on the up-and-up. Sometimes those efforts are appreciated, sometimes they are not…

HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY

4.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014

In the end, like Holbrook’s enchanting rhythms on stage, “Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey” expertly catches the mesmerizing beats of a man who continues to share his life—in the guise of one of America’s greatest humorists—with his adoring public….

PERFECT HUNCH OF AN AGORAPHOBE

2.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 84 minutes

It works stylistically for the most part, and Hammacott delivers a solid performance, but the acting can be dry and stiff otherwise. Still, even though I feel the film goes off the rails by its final act, the journey there was engaging enough to keep me interested until the end. This one might not come together as well as one could hope for, but the filmmaking skills throughout do hint that, given more time and experience, there is quality to come in future projects…

500 MILES

3 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 82 minutes

It works in all the ways that it should, and where it has weaknesses, at least by my estimation, they don’t entirely derail the entire experience. The film isn’t one that I’d write home about, or likely remember enough to suggest to someone on a whim, but it wasn’t an unpleasant film to sit through at all…

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014

“The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz” builds a strong case against the American government, whose insatiable ability to continually undermine its basic democratic principles caused the sad demise of one of the internet’s great heroes…

IBOGA NIGHTS

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014

It’s an intense journey with these addicts, and Scott is in the thick of it, keeping the camera rolling in all instances. We see the drug abuse, we see the detox sessions and we get the first-hand accounting from everyone involved…

SARAH’S ROOM

3 Stars
Year Released: 2013
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 85 minutes

Throughout, the edit and camerawork offer up a sense of movement and energy, but nothing seems to actually progress forward so much as spin in circles. By the time things do come to a head for the film’s resolution, you wonder why it took as long as it did to get to that point…

KING OF HERRINGS

4 Stars
