HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY

4.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 95 minutes

In the end, like Holbrook’s enchanting rhythms on stage, “Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey” expertly catches the mesmerizing beats of a man who continues to share his life—in the guise of one of America’s greatest humorists—with his adoring public….

PERFECT HUNCH OF AN AGORAPHOBE

2.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 84 minutes

It works stylistically for the most part, and Hammacott delivers a solid performance, but the acting can be dry and stiff otherwise. Still, even though I feel the film goes off the rails by its final act, the journey there was engaging enough to keep me interested until the end. This one might not come together as well as one could hope for, but the filmmaking skills throughout do hint that, given more time and experience, there is quality to come in future projects…

500 MILES

3 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 82 minutes

It works in all the ways that it should, and where it has weaknesses, at least by my estimation, they don’t entirely derail the entire experience. The film isn’t one that I’d write home about, or likely remember enough to suggest to someone on a whim, but it wasn’t an unpleasant film to sit through at all…

THE INTERNET’S OWN BOY: THE STORY OF AARON SWARTZ

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 105 minutes

“The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz” builds a strong case against the American government, whose insatiable ability to continually undermine its basic democratic principles caused the sad demise of one of the internet’s great heroes…

IBOGA NIGHTS

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 96 minutes

It’s an intense journey with these addicts, and Scott is in the thick of it, keeping the camera rolling in all instances. We see the drug abuse, we see the detox sessions and we get the first-hand accounting from everyone involved…

SARAH’S ROOM

3 Stars
Year Released: 2013
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 85 minutes

Throughout, the edit and camerawork offer up a sense of movement and energy, but nothing seems to actually progress forward so much as spin in circles. By the time things do come to a head for the film’s resolution, you wonder why it took as long as it did to get to that point…

KING OF HERRINGS

4 Stars

HOW TO LOSE JOBS & ALIENATE GIRLFRIENDS

3 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 73 minutes

To his credit, Meadmore dishes the sometimes insensitive honesty at others but doesn’t spare himself his own righteous wrath. He admits when he’s wrong, which is often, and he delivers a film that is as warts and all as they come…

GRIND

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014

First off, any time you can put Anthony Rapp in a position where he gets to sing his heart out, you’ve got something of quality. The man is talented to a ridiculous degree, and coupling that musical talent with the opportunity to deliver a powerful and layered performance only puts things over the top…

THE MOMENT

3.5 Stars
Year Released: 2014

Most of all, I like that Norris and Weinstock do not spoon feed their story to viewers, but instead offer a host of feasible clues and prospects, and let them decide what’s happening…

UNDER THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN

2 Stars
Year Released: 2014
MPAA Rating: Unrated
Running Time: 111 minutes

The story of a person moving to LA to make it big as an actor, only to find employment as a waiter instead, has become commonplace and cliché. The whole “chasing your dreams vs. practical responsibility” is a universal conflict, yes, but it’s starting to feel overdone in this seemingly blossoming subgenre of films about struggling actors, or filmmakers, trying to make sense of their lives amid adversity…

THE PERFECT 46

Hertford delivers a character that is as much a tortured genius as he is flawed and damaged as a person. It’s a tour de force performance, creating a character that can be lauded and loathed in equal measure, showcasing a determined strength amid fractured weakness…

JUDEX: CRITERION COLLECTION (BLU-RAY)

3 Stars
Year Released: 1963

Played by American magician Channing Pollack, Judex does some very fun sleight of hand throughout the film, but when it comes time to kick some butt, he finds himself clobbered over the head frequently…
