PSYCHO VS. PSYCHO

THE SHOWER SCENE:

It would be unfair to make any kind of comparison between both films without speaking at length about the infamous shower scene. This isn’t going to be a perfect analysis mind you. This isn’t film class. I just want to roughly compare the two scenes as best as I can.

Original (In Bold) Remake (In Italics)

#1 Marion is in the shower, we see someone enter the room through the shower curtain.

#1 Marion is in the shower, we see someone enter the room through the shower curtain.

#2 The person roughly pulls open the curtain and is brandishing something. “Psycho” Music starts.

#2 The person roughly pulls open the curtain and is brandishing a knife. (NOTE: We run into a problem right away. Marion’s attacker is quite obviously a man in a wig.)

#3 Marion turns around.

#3 Marion turns around. On her face isn’t fear, but a kind of placid confusion.

#4 Marion, same shot, closer than #3, she begins to scream.

#4 The attacker again with the crazy wig and knife.

#5 Marion’s open mouth.

#5 Marion gasps.

#6 The assailant. Whoever it is has a knife and is brandishing it. He/she is in shadow but it appears to be a woman in a dress with her hair in a bun, the image of a sweet old lady as a mad killer. The knife comes down.

#6 The attacker raises the knife slowly.

#7 Marion. The knife comes down on her. She reacts to it, having been stabbed.

#7 Marion screams.

#8 The crazy old lady, she raises the knife again.

#8 A close-up of the attacker’s hand and knife.

#9 A quick shot of Marion’s arm.

#9 A slow-mo zoom into Marion’s screaming mouth.

#10 An overhead shot of Marion grabbing the woman’s arm trying to block the shot.

#10 The attacker raises the knife and brings it down. “Psycho” music starts.

#11 Marion’s face, screaming. She’s in serious pain and is terrified.

#11 A close-up of the attacker’s hand and knife as he/she grinds it left and right after the blade hits the target.

#12 Marion fighting off the crazed killer. This time it’s quite blurry.

#12 Marion leaning up against the shower wall, the knife’s blade poised above her as the attacker is lifting it back up.

#13 A shot of the old lady in shadow. We can’t see the woman’s face even though we should. She raises the knife. It comes down again.

#13 The attacker, knife raised. Ready to strike. He/she brings the weapon down.

#14 Marion flailing to the right and almost falling as she is stabbed.

#14 A close-up of the attacker’s hand holding the knife blade as it strikes.

#15 The old lady again as she raises the knife and brings it down.

#15 A shot of Marion’s side as she turns towards her killer.

#16 Marion standing back up straight.

#16 An overhead shot of Marion holding the attacker’s arm, trying to stop the knife.

#17 The old lady. The image is quite blurry now. The knife comes down again.

#17 A close-up of Marion’s screaming face, blurred by the rushing water.

#18 Marion’s head. The screen is filled with rushing water from the shower.

#18 An overhead shot of Marion fighting off the attacker. This time however, the attacker isn’t in the frame. Only the knife blade. She’s managed to push him quite a bit away.

#19 The old lady. An almost identical shot as #17.

#19 A close-up of Marion flailing to her left, her right arm and hand raised in self-defense.

#20 Marion wincing in pain. Her face blurred by water.

#20 An overhead shot of Marion fighting off the attacker. Again this person is not in focus, just the knife. Marion lets go of the attacker’s arm and covers her head.

#21 The old lady again. The shot is almost identical to #17 and 19 except that her hand holding the knife is much more in focus.

#21 The attacker raising the knife and bringing it down.

#22 Shot of Marion’s stomach, the knife not even an inch away. Here we do see the knife graze it and there is a little bit of blood. It’s not IN her, but it’s damn close.

#22 Marion standing there with her hands raised, the knife stabs down but we don’t see where. She shakes her head left and right “No”.

#23 Marion’s face again. Screaming in pain.

#23 The attacker as he/she raises the knife again. This time their face can kind of be seen. His/her eyes are there, so are some lips.

#24 A shot of the hand and the knife from Marion’s POV. The knife and hand are very high up in the air. As if triumphant.

#24 Marion’s feet as blood begins to drip down.

#25 shot of Marion’s side. We see the knife lower itself just out of view, but it looks like she was stabbed in the breast.

#25 Marion shakes her head “No”.

#26 Marion screaming.

#26 An outside shot of thunderclouds.

#27 A shot of Marion’s feet. Blood is dripping all over the tub and being washed away by the water.

#27 The killer, completely out of focus, all we can see is the water from the shower and a blurry dark shadow behind that. The knife comes down and his/her hand holding the blade is in complete focus.

#28 Marion turning to her side, obscured by the water.

#28 Marion shakes her head “No.”

#29 A wider angle of Marion turning. She puts her hand on the shower wall and we see a knife come down on her back.

#29 An outside shot of thunderclouds.

#30 Another shot of her legs and feet as blood pools up in the tub.

#30 Marion shakes her head “No.” We see the knife come down on her.

#31 A blurry close-up of Marion’s hand.

#34 Marion’s stomach, the knife touches it bloodlessly.

#35 Marion turning around in the tub. She begins to slip down into a sitting position in the tub. Her breath is ragged and slow. Her eyes don’t focus or seem to see anything. She reaches out with her hand.

#35 A shot of the hand and the knife from Marion’s POV. The knife and hand are very high up in the air, as if triumphant. The knife comes down again.

#36 A close-up of her hand grabbing the shower curtain. She clutches it in a death grip, literally.

#36 Marion’s back as she bunches up into a ball.

#37 An overhead shot of Marion in the tub falling forward.

#37 Marion’s legs and feet as blood and gore drip down freely into the tub.

#38 A shot of the shower curtain rings breaking off as it’s pulled down with Marion’s body.

#38 Marion turns her head.

#39 Marion collapses headfirst on the floor right by the toilet.

#39 Closer shot of #38

#40 That famous shot of the showerhead spraying down on the camera.

#40 Marion is leaning against the shower wall as the knife comes down on her back.

#41 A shot of Marion’s feet as blood is washed into the drain. The camera focuses on the drain for a moment and then fades to…

#41 Marion’s legs and feet again. Much blood in the tub.

#42 A close-up of Marion’s eye, the camera swirls in the opposite direction of the drain. Symbolizing, I suppose, that her life went down the drain as well. Her face is still terrified and screaming even though it’s quite dead.

After that we more or less return to our Original movie in progress.

The remake’s shower scene, however, continues for a few more cuts.

#42 The killer raises the knife, but does not stab it down. The job is done it seems.

#51 That famous shot of the showerhead spraying down on the camera.

#52 A shot of Marion’s feet as blood is washed into the drain. The camera focuses on the drain for a moment and then fades to…

#53 A close-up of Marion’s eye, the camera swirls in the opposite direction of the drain. Symbolizing, I suppose, that her life went down the drain as well.

After that we more or less return to our remake in progress.
