OSCARS 1997: A VIEW FROM A COUCH

I remember watching “Footloose” last year on TNT. The one lesson I
took away from the film is that it doesn’t matter whether you come from a big
town, or a small town, you can only take so much Kenny Loggins. From
this year’s Oscar festivities, I learned it doesn’t matter whether you come
from a big town or a small town, you can only take so much Celine Dion,
either.
Also, you know the producers have great respect for your category when
they bring in Chris Farley and David Spade to present it. No one was
apparently brave enough to co-present with Courtney Love. I’m not sure who the producers were more scared of freaking out, Love or David “Shine” Helfgott. I, and the twenty other drunks at my house were happy for the recognition for “Fargo”. The best line of the night was from Best Documentary Short winner, Jessica Yu, who noted that, “… my dress cost more than my film.” The single most entertaining performance of the night was from presenter Kevin Spacey who, prodded by host Billy Crystal, launched into an improvised Christopher Walken impersonation. In three minutes he provided more entertainment than all of “Albino Alligator”. Next year, they should just hire Walken to host.
Finally, I still can only take so much Kenny Loggins.
