@Filmin140Panel Our moderators this evening are @atlfilm365, @FilmThreat and @shericandler #filmin140 -9:01 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel Our panelists are Paul Osborne (@PaulMakesMovies), filmmaker behind “Official Rejection” and… #filmin140 -9:02 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel Melanie Addington (@oxfordfilmfreak), co-director of the Oxford Film Festvial. #filmin140 -9:02 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @shericandler I thought you did it for the free bacon, that apparently was brought. #filmin140 -9:02 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie We love festivals – in concept – but entry fees and lack of transparency are big turn offs. #filmin140 -9:02 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @PaulMakesMovies no the martinis being served #filmin140 -9:02 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel @oxfordfilmfreak‘s tweets are not always showing in the chat, so @FilmThreat will post her answers… #filmin140 -9:03 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @WaterholeMovie Idaho Int’l doesn’t charge entry fees because the director believes it’s bad karma. Seriously. #filmin140 -9:03 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms @shericandler wait, there are martinis? #filmin140 -9:03 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @shericandler BACON martinis??? Mmmmmm… #filmin140 -9:03 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel 1st question for panelists, why do filmmakers submit to film festivals? #filmin140 -9:04 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @variancefilms yeah but you have to know the code word #filmin140 -9:04 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat Welcome to tonight’s Film in 140 Twitter Panel! Our topic tonight is “Film Festivals: Who Needs Them?” #filmin140 -9:04 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly I had a bacon martini once. It was terrible. Shook my worldview RT @PaulMakesMovies: @shericandler BACON martinis??? Mmmmmm… #filmin140 -9:04 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FirstGlanceFilm RT @FilmThreat: Welcome to tonight’s Film in 140 Twitter Panel! Our topic tonight is “Film Festivals: Who Needs Them?” #filmin140 -9:05 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel Filmmakers submit because they want to play the festival. Ah…but why play at a festival. Bigger question. #filmin140 -9:05 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie Nice @flywayfilmfest doesn’t either RT @PaulMakesMovies: Idaho Int’l doesn’t charge b/c the director believes it’s bad karma. #filmin140 -9:05 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe I’ve got to leave soon for a dinner but I couldn’t resist when I saw we were going to be drinking martinis & cosmos! #filmin140 -9:05 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel There are a lot of reasons why. Some are realistic, about getting in front of an audience… #filmin140 -9:05 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms @shericandler is it please? #filmin140 -9:06 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler I think they submit because they think that is what you’re supposed to do, not much consideration to which ones do you good #filmin140 -9:06 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel – Some are less realistic, thinking they might get discovered and win the movie lottery by getting studio notice. #filmin140 -9:06 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel @oxfordfilmfreak: Filmmakers submit to fests to have an exhibition space #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne @WaterholeMovie @WaterholeMovie People have heard of the Idaho International? #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @BRM Yes. If you’re interested in participating. More perspectives are good for the conversation. #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly @PaulMakesMovies is the audience argument antiquated now? #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @shericandler True. Not all festivals are created equal. There are levels…and levels of the films sought BY fests. #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe Keep in mind: You don’t need to submit to 50 fests to be selected for 50 fests. Use best judgment when submitting! Save your $$ #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @gregorybayne Idaho Int’l is a pretty good fest, run by smart cinephiles. #filmin140 -9:07 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: Filmmakers submit to fests to have an exhibition space #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie Like I have said before @grking made a movie for what less than we spent in submission fees. #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe Do your research. Create a grid of fests you dream of then find the CHEAPEST way to get there. #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel RT @robertamunroe: You dont need to submit to 50 fests to be selected 4 50 fests. Use best judgment when submitting! Save your $ #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly just spend that $50 on lottery tickets? RT @PaulMakesMovies: @Filmin140Panel win the movie lottery by getting studio notice. #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler Q: what do fest think about considering number of engaged fans a film has as a requisite for acceptance? #filmin140 -9:08 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel Here’s the most important thing – a filmmaker should know why he/she is submitting. True with every submission #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne @PaulMakesMovies I live here, and ran the *other* festival in town for 5 years. I see them as an example of what not to do. #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 Why filmmakers submit has changed. 40 years ago, it was for the sake of exhibition, love of film and making a name. #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: some do it because want to win money for other projects, for networking, for a place to vacation #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FirstGlanceFilm Filmmakers submit to festivals to show there films in a theatrical atmosphere #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly me too RT @WaterholeMovie: Like I have said before @grking made a movie for what less than we spent in submission fees. #filmin140 -9:09 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @Filmin140Panel The size of a potential audience is not important to me; I am hoping to build audience for the filmmaker. #filmin140 -9:10 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel from @WaterholeMovie: What % of films would you speculate actually make into a festival via the screening process? #filmin140 -9:10 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel Unfortunately I think a lot of filmmakers still submit assuming they can “hit it big”. Not realistic. #filmin140 -9:10 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@sunspotpictures RT @WaterholeMovie: What % of films would you speculate actually make into a festival via the screening process? #filmin140 -9:10 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie We would gladly screen anywhere! RT @PaulMakesMovies: Here’s the most important thing – u should know why he/she is submitting. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @Filmin140Panel @WaterholeMovie: Since I’ve never programmed for a fest, gotta leave this one to @oxfordfilmfreak. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: As a fest, I don’t think abt limited fan base – those r the films I want 2 program & expand audiences horizons #filmin140 -9:11 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @BRM – Good answer! #filmin140 -9:11 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: @PaulMakesMovies Agreed – using fests as an audience builder is more realistic than getting “discovered” #filmin140 -9:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FirstGlanceFilm “Hitting it Big”, only happens in a very small percentage of festivals #filmin140 -9:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @oxfordfilmfreak are you very sure of your audience that you program for? Or do you base your selections purely on your taste? #filmin140 -9:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly Q: I once proposed spending the submission fee on screeners to hand out at fest venues. Better use on $$? #filmin140 -9:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie We have a date with free sushi and beer. Will have to read the transcript later. Play nice! #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler see I think it is far easier for fests to program for audience taste, than to bring in films and try to find audience for it. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne @PaulMakesMovies Too many venues, & frankly films, for a fairly small, non-cinephile town averaging audiences of 15-30 per film. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: @sunspotpictures Depends on the fest. About 50-60 percent of ours comes from subs. Such a range subs they get #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@WaterholeMovie Exactly, value every potential pair of eyes! RT @PaulMakesMovies: @BRM – Good answer! #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly I personally think it’s a HUGE mistake to hand out screeners freely. Major. You want people to come to your… #filmin140 -9:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly …screening. Be a little withholding with your movie. Builds demand and buzz. I’ve done this with MUCH success. #filmin140 -9:14 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak A combo of audience feedback, large variety for screening committee – and yes, some is for taste by co-directors #filmin140 -9:14 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @sherichandler speaking for my festival (Sarasota), I program a wide variety of films 2 reach the diversity of the film community #filmin140 -9:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly – Don’t just give your movie away. In my humble opinion. #filmin140 -9:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat Took him forever, but @PaulMakesMovies got me to see his film at a screening… #filmin140 -9:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @shericandler speaking for my festival (Sarasota), I program a wide variety of films 2 reach the diversity of the film community #filmin140 -9:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: @PaulMakesMovies Agreed – fest and filmmaker must work together to fill seats – full house – bigger buzz. #filmin140 -9:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @BRM are you successful at reaching diverse audiences? do they turn up or are they each aware of the films chosen for them? #filmin140 -9:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @FilmThreat That’s right! I wouldn’t even give my PARENTS a screener. They flew to a festival. It was worth it. #filmin140 -9:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @sunspotpictures We hit about 90% of our films selected from submissions. But we get enough films to do that. #filmin140 -9:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @PaulMakesMovies Keep in mind, tho, if you goal is to get a film reviewed in a timely fashion, sharing a screener can be helpful #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies In terms of drawing an audience, it’s the festival’s job to work the local peeps over the years to create a POTENTIAL audience… #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FirstGlanceFilm We work with filmmakers to create a larger audience and try to program to our audiences taste and demographic #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe AND MELANIE! @oxfordfilmfreak @robertamunroe And bacon.. #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms My take: fests are a place to find auds with open minds. They are there to discover. #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly WOW. Ballsy RT @PaulMakesMovies: @FilmThreat That’s right! I wouldn’t even give my PARENTS a screener. #filmin140 -9:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies Then the filmmaker’s job to direct that potential audience toward THEIR specific movie. #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat It is about deciding what your goal is, tho. If a review is less important than building a fest audience, hold on to ur screeners #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies Expecting a filmmaker to show up in a town where the fest has no presence and draw a crowd…not gonna happen. #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @shericandler yes, we have good success with a wide variety of movies, but it’s based on org’s community building outside of fest #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler YES! RT @PaulMakesMovies: Then the filmmakers job to direct that potential audience toward THEIR specific movie. #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe Also, consider WATCHING films that *did* get into fests you want to submit to – does yours really compare in quality, story etc. #filmin140 -9:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies Conversely, if you’re a fest who’s worked hard to create a presence, to have a filmmaker show up and sit on their ass…insulting #filmin140 -9:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: @BRM @shericandler I live in a college-retiree town so our audience is divided yet we see both at fest 4 different films. #filmin140 -9:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly I have no problem giving out screeners. People who get them are unlikely to buy a ticket #filmin140 -9:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @BRM right and I don’t think most fests do this on a full time full year basis. Only season in the 6 weeks up to the fest. #filmin140 -9:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies Festival and filmmaker must work together to make “the show” work. #filmin140 -9:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: Paul – it is fest’s job over years to program well. But filmmaker at fest must sell his (or her) product too #filmin140 -9:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly – Each screener you hand out is at least one less person who will buy your movie if it’s ever released. #filmin140 -9:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @PaulMakesMovies on your circuit run how often did you see this coordinated working together happen? #filmin140 -9:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: I spend the week of the fest getting filmmmakers interviews, talks, etc – those who want audience work to build it #filmin140 -9:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly – At least one. Assuming that, if they love your movie, they don’t just copy it and pass it around further. #filmin140 -9:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat In case folks are wondering, @oxfordfilmfreak is @oxfordfilmfreak; trying to save characters while reposting her answers #filmin140 -9:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @lmcnelly – It’s just my opinion. No right or wrong. But I feel it’s a mistake and smacks of desperation. #filmin140 -9:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @shericandler agree. It’s irresponsible not to build community partnerships. We’re not Sundance, we know what we need to be good. #filmin140 -9:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: One thing we added this year was a filmmaker merch table – 100% goes to them. only 25% participated #filmin140 -9:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @shericandler Almost always. But to varying degrees of success. About half the fests I went to had good local presence. #filmin140 -9:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @PaulMakesMovies I don’t think it smacks of desperation. But if you’re after distribution, there is a way to do things. #filmin140 -9:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @PaulMakesMovies Totally agree about filmmakers and fests working together. #filmin140 -9:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms #filmin140 – I probably wouldn’t want to release a film that’s given 100s of copies out for free. -9:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel @oxfordfilmfreak Why do you think the merch table idea was less successful? #filmin140 -9:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @FilmThreat WHAT?! That’s insane! I would’ve jumped at the opportunity. #filmin140 -9:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @FilmThreat A merch table is a GREAT idea. Pity so few participated. But keep it up and more will. #filmin140 -9:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @PaulMakesMovies which is why, I feel, that filmmakers should know more about the fest world before putting a plan together. #filmin140 -9:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LoveYourShorts RT @PaulMakesMovies: Festival and filmmaker must work together to make “the show” work. #filmin140 -9:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@grking shame on them RT @FilmThreat: @oxfordfilmfreak: we added this yr a filmmaker merch table – 100% goes to them. only 25% participated #filmin140 -9:24 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @variancefilms – Correct. If you do the circuit horde your screeners. Build demand. Make them hit the theatre! #filmin140 -9:24 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly RT @PaulMakesMovies: @FilmThreat A merch table is a GREAT idea. Pity so few participated. But keep it up and more will. #filmin140 -9:24 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @BRM – And why I made OFFICIAL REJECTION – to give them a taste of what the circuit is really like from the filmmaker side. #filmin140 -9:24 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LoveYourShorts RT @variancefilms: My take: fests are a place to find auds with open minds. They are there to discover. #filmin140 -9:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler I am more in the @gregorybayne school of thought, not all of your films need to be horded and screened exclusively in a theater #filmin140 -9:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel What other options do filmmakers have besides festivals, if they want to show to a large audience? #filmin140 -9:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @variancefilms Also, the fest will appreciate u not handing out screeners because they’ll sell more tickets. Be good to da fest #filmin140 -9:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@robertamunroe Also, don’t rely on Withoutabox to tell you what festivals are worthy – only you can decide that based on your research! #filmin140 -9:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@reelheart #filmin140 – Indie Filmmakers needs fests who can get distribution folks to network with them and audiences who appreciate indie #film -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel @robertamunroe How can filmmakers research festivals? #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Filmin140Panel online, just get it out there. Keep your budget modest and get people seeing your work #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @robertamunroe – Good point. WAB will NEVER allow the rating of fests on their site. It would cut into their profits. #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@CriticalTodd @shericandler how would you measure engaged fans? #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @robertamunroe However, their message boards are really good if u spend time on them for sussing out that info. #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @BRM Every year I’m shocked how few film festivals and local screenings filmmakers have attended before submitting their films. #filmin140 -9:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly RT @shericandler: I am more in the @gregorybayne school of thought, not all of your films need to be screened in a theater #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@spitesprite So true. RT @PaulMakesMovies Festival and filmmaker must work together to make “the show” work. #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel RT @atlfilm365: Every year Im shocked how few film festivals & local screenings filmmakers hv attended be4 submitting films. #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @shericandler But it should be appropriately timed, no? Perhaps you “horde” for a bit to build buzz and then release online. #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms @PaulMakesMovies as a distrib, I’ll say your investors will appreciate it too because one of us might be able to monetize it. #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@BRM @Filmin140Panel We pride ourselves on our reputation among filmmakers who have attended our event. Ask them about Sarasota! #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @shericandler They don’t all need to be, but if you want to snag a distributor, you shouldn’t cut into their market. #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@prairiecunning RT @lmcnelly: RT @shericandler: I am more in the @gregorybayne school of thought, not all of your films need to be screened in a theater #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@johnfrisbie @Filmin140Panel Alternatives to fests will grow with internet/television marriage and a few good ‘channels’ #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: Is Sqirrl still around? I liked the concept.for filmmakers to rate fests #filmin140 -9:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@reelheart #filmin140 – What fests don’t need are Indie Filmmakers who lack passion for the art of promotion. They need to learn marketing skills. -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms But @shericandler it’s hard for filmmakers to know which is which,giving out screeners makes that decision up front without data. #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @CriticalTodd Facebook sends u a page analytic & any1 can do Google analytics, press mentions, blog mentions, twitter mentions #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne @shericandler If you’re going to tie yourself to that anchor, let me know how things look from the bottom of the ocean… #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@reelheart RT @atlfilm365: @PaulMakesMovies Totally agree about filmmakers and fests working together. #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @LordPancreas – Yes! Exactly. You should time things. For the fests, horde your movie. Then sell DVDs. Then stream. #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@grking @edward_burns said it’s mainly the filmmaker’s ego that loves to see their film on the big screen (theater) – fests satisfy this #filmin140 -9:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler you guys all act like you aren’t building fans all along during production. tsk tsk #filmin140 -9:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@grking but be open to all platfroms asap – know what type of film you have and where potential audiences are #filmin140 -9:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @LordPancreas Releasing films has always worked better in stages then the “give it up on the first date” approach. Just sayin’. #filmin140 -9:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: Besides fests – rent out theaters, hit the college circuit..sell the film? #filmin140 -9:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms @shericandler i still say very few people give a shit how you make your movie. content is king. #filmin140 -9:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne Some of this conversation sounds like it’s being broadcast from the year 2000. #filmin140 -9:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @grking I also think theatrical screening helps an audience take a film more seriously. It’s more “real”. #filmin140 -9:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @grking Movies are about “event”, historically. #filmin140 -9:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel Would we even be debating festivals if they didn’t charge submission fees? Is this about fests’ usefulness, or their cost? #filmin140 -9:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@reelheart @FilmThreat #filmin140 Totally agree “But filmmaker at fest must sell his (or her) product too”. Many think job is done when post is done- -9:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @variancefilms no it worked well in stages when you couldn’t see it online for free. It worked for distribs #filmin140 -9:33 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @LordPancreas OFFICIAL REJECTION is available on DVD and VOD. DVD far far FAR outsells VOD. Not even close, baby. DVD lives. #filmin140 -9:33 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@norestrictions @Filmin140Panel @BRM yes because it is the in-person connection where u learn the most about your film from your audience. #filmin140 -9:42 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@johnfrisbie @dylanschenker loved the late 90s surge in house concerts – with wireless pico projectors something similar could be possible #filmin140 -9:42 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@reelheart #filmin140 Best research on how well a film festival fares is submit if you urself are a screenwriter or filmmaker. Top tier is an illusion- -9:42 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @shericandler In any way. Off the top of my head, maybe doing Google Ads rather than TV ads. More modern & cost-effective. #filmin140 -9:48 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @PaulMakesMovies yes, but then to say you can’t see it until I say so. not a good plan. that’s a good way to get pirated though #filmin140 -9:48 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@PaulMakesMovies @variancefilms – That’s correct. I’m suggesting marketing, and publicity. And hell, social networking. #filmin140 -9:48 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@FilmThreat @oxfordfilmfreak: & we are all volunteers that work year round 2 program the fest because we care about filmmakers & connecting to audience #filmin140 -9:48 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @variancefilms advertising is usually a tool of marketing, but not one indies can really use much #filmin140 -9:49 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@variancefilms If films being given away for free is the norm, only rich kids get to make films. That sounds fucking horrible to us. #filmin140 -9:49 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@gregorybayne @PaulMakesMovies I can see how a film about film festival rejection, shown at festivals could draw a large audience. #filmin140 -9:49 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly Awards? Really? RT @wifilmfest: A top question from filmmakers submitting here (Wisconsin FF) is “what awards can I win.” #filmin140 -10:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest We expanded from 4 to 5 days. Next April, will have approx 175 slots. Perfect size. #filmin140 -10:12 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @atlfilm365 do they really though Charles? I haven’t seen it #filmin140 -10:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest @lmcnelly Only awards here are for local films, or audience vote, so some filmmakers look elsewhere. Not interested. #filmin140 -10:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @wifilmfest Are awards really that important? Unless you get one from a huge fest, they don’t do anything for you, only your ego #filmin140 -10:13 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@milesmaker Lol! RT @shericandler: @vgbnd like it or not, you ARE businessmen. if you want just art, learn to draw, it is cheaper #filmin140 -10:14 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler and the chance to say you’re an “award winning” director #filmin140 -10:14 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest From my programming side, I feel that awards push audience in wrong direction. I want them to find merit in more stories. #filmin140 -10:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 Bizmess people never need to be artists. But artists need to be bizmess people. The 2 don’t don’t mix well for me. -10:15 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest I worry that some festivals (recklessly?) give out 45 awards, just to get their name on a filmmaker’s marketing materials. #filmin140 -10:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas @wifilmfest #filmin140 Awards do help for people outside the industry. They see laurels & think the film is worth watching. -10:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@lmcnelly the difference between that and any non-Oscar is zero. RT @shericandler: and the chance to say you’re an “award winning” director #filmin140 -10:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @shericandler Absolutely. Some of our members enjoy the weekday screenings over the weekend. #filmin140 -10:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd u only need to worry about the biz if you plan to make a living from your art. Otherwise, create, create, don’t worry #filmin140 -10:16 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @vgbnd Business people are artists in their own right. They just create for a different end. #filmin140 -10:17 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Chuklz How important are awards in regards to subsequent selections? If I win at a festival how do I let later ones know? #filmin140 -10:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest That’s true, @vgbnd. But in some cases are they only as effective as some quotes in movie ads from obscure critics? #filmin140 -10:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 i just find that bizmess people are doing less and less and we as filmmakers are doing more and more… -10:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @vgbnd I don’t know, I would question how meaningful [insert random fest award here] is to people outside the industry. #filmin140 -10:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @wifilmfest but they would anyway just by being an official selection #filmin140 -10:18 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd but now you own your film, any rights you want, to do with as you want. That’s the diff btwn now and b4 #filmin140 -10:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 Not only do we have to be artists in making the film we have to think bizmess. What do the bizmess people do? -10:19 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @vgbnd Why even concern yourself with what “they” are doing though? You have to look out for yourself, and work w/like-minded ppl #filmin140 -10:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @Chuklz Why you won is probably most important. Not always easy to get, but see if you can get Judges to tell you why. #filmin140 -10:20 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest @shericandler Yes, that’s true. “Official selection” can look just as beefy when artfully framed with some really nice laurels. #filmin140 -10:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd feels like ur asking when can we go back to being lazy artists instead of all this empowered filmmaker crap? #filmin140 -10:21 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 Most industry outsides only know Sundance. The award laurels for industry outsiders are like a stamp of approval. -10:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @Chuklz The number of award is irrelevant, context is. #filmin140 -10:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest @Chuklz How programmers view earlier award wins may vary widely between festivals. It may actually matter a lot to some. #filmin140 -10:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @wifilmfest in fact those are the ones usually seen, more than award winners #filmin140 -10:22 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @oxfordfilmfreak Definitely. But I certainly wouldn’t say, OK, I have to get AT LEAST 4 AWARDS or I’ve failed as a filmmaker #filmin140 -10:23 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 Not many like minded “Fuck Bizmess” people out there willing to do it for love & art. i’ve a crew of about 6 who do -10:24 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@JasonLGilmore @milesmaker explain this #filmin140 thing to me please. I like what I’m hearing. -10:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Chuklz Where is the best place to research festivals in regards to matching to your film? Buckshot submitting seems waste everyones time.#filmin140 -10:25 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd what do you guys do for money? #filmin140 -10:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @shericandler #filmin140 “Lazy artists”? The artists i know have to be the hardest working people i know… -10:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz start with WAB, then look up the fests websites that look like matches for you #filmin140 -10:26 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest An interesting thing about festivals is how a film may be handled so differently. May flourish, or be so-so. Rarely consistent. #filmin140 -10:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd but not making money? and they are fine with that? which is fine. But most filmmakers I kno want to make films to live #filmin140 -10:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @Chuklz Studys the fest, but also look to the city and the overall culture. #filmin140 -10:27 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest My advice for picking fests is to identify some earlier films that are rough ball park of yours. Find out where they played. #filmin140 -10:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz be sure and look at the websites, if they are dead, not updated, pass on that one #filmin140 -10:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest If a festival chose a film that is something like yours in tone, subject, style, whatever, programmers might have that taste. #filmin140 -10:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @vgbnd Who says you can’t have love and art and still make money doing it? It’s hard, sure, but few things worth doing aren’t #filmin140 -10:28 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz then turn to their social networking sites, are they updated regularly, do they allow you to access? if not, pass #filmin140 -10:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Chuklz @shericandler What if they are brand new like your latest adventure? :) #filmin140 -10:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @Chuklz Austin and Seattle have strong music scenes. We in Atlanta have very active Gay and African American communities. #filmin140 -10:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @shericandler #filmin140 i want to make films to live too bizmess people don’t have to think artistically but artist do it’s 2X the work. -10:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest If you made a social justice doc, some fests just can’t sell it to their audience. Find those who already prog something similar. #filmin140 -10:29 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz they should still be posting. Newbies are a risk for sure #filmin140 -10:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd ok, that’s the rub. you have to work harder than they do. #filmin140 -10:30 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest As @shericandler said, look at their web sites. Check most recent full year’s site. Do you like the way they list their films? #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 The hard part is expressing yourself creatively and artistically and totally worth the effort the rest is bullshit! -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler many programmers visit other fests too and if they like ur film, you may get invite, no fee submission #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@pimpinindies RT @FilmThreat: RT @vgbnd: #filmin140 Film is also an art. Its not just a product. We are starting to sound like bizmess people not artists. #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @vgbnd That’s a really unproductive mindset. Everybody involved in film works hard. But even so,if you really love it, who cares? #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @wifilmfest agreed. Many fests have their past programming still up during submissions. 15 minutes browsing can help selection. #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest Does the fest write good descriptions? Clear info? Easy to navigate sched? All these things help the audience find (your) films. #filmin140 -10:31 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz I’d say on site, it is really tough. They are under pressure. Try online spying first #filmin140 -10:32 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@pimpinindies RT @FilmThreat: @oxfordfilmfreak: @milesmaker Why shouldn’t the filmmaker do both? Use fests as one part of strategy only. #filmin140 -10:32 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @milesmaker I would venture to say you would have heard by now. only 3 weeks away and starting to announce publicly #filmin140 -10:35 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@vgbnd @LordPancreas #filmin140 i love making films. Hate thinking like a marketeer & a bizmess person. It’s time that could go into the next film. -10:35 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest Most of the audience will be relying on a fest’s printed guide/web site for all their info for making ticket choices. #filmin140 -10:35 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @vgbnd get a PMD on board. See @jon_reiss for that reference #filmin140 -10:35 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest Choosing fests for your film: read fest’s blurbs for films that you have seen and know. Does it sound like the same film to you? #filmin140 -10:36 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @StudioAlethea Not always. I have a business sense and my screenwriting partner has none. We just found each other. #filmin140 -10:37 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Chuklz I have this instinct that promoting a short may come off as pretentious (esp onsite). Is this a fair instinct? #filmin140 -10:37 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@brionykidd @norestrictions Reach out in what sense? Just, “hi, this is the film I’m going to be submitting to you soon”? #filmin140 -10:37 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@milesmaker My quandry working the fest circuit & its ‘powers that be’ leave me weighing alternatives: my time/energy going direct-to-market #filmin140 -10:37 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @wifilmfest wouldn’t you say many small fests just rely on the blurb submitted by the filmmaker? #filmin140 -10:37 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest Yes, many festivals just clip blurbs from presskits. Fests should tell THEIR audience why they picked it in the first place. #filmin140 -10:39 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@LordPancreas @StudioAlethea I think film is an art. Entertainment is just one of the many dimensions of art. #filmin140 -10:40 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest Short films get especially abused in the blurb department. Very few fests write original blurbs. I have been guilty here. #filmin140 -10:40 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@shericandler @Chuklz have you seen the Cannes short film corner, littered with collateral for shorts #filmin140 -10:40 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest If tonight’s tweets seemed weird and random, it’s cuz I was playing in the #filmin140 chats, discussing festivals. -11:40 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@TheSpoilerAlert RT @FilmThreat: @oxfordfilmfreak: great advice. RT @norestrictions: I recommend filmmkers reach out 2 fest programmers months in advance 2 build relationship #filmin140 -11:41 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@SebastopolDocs RT @FilmThreat: @oxfordfilmfreak: @milesmaker Programmers don’t want kiss-asses -annoying. They want filmmkers that build relationship over + than 1 fest. #filmin140 -11:44 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@wifilmfest @brionykidd “What festivals do we recommend for arty-but-genre-inspired-with-a-feminist-twist?” // I want this as a cocktail. #filmin140 -11:52 PM Oct 13th, 2010

@Kate__Stone RT @shericandler: @atlfilm365 I think all filmmakers should volunteer at a fest at least once. Then they’ll understand the process #filmin140 -12:12 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@Streitberger RT @robertamunroe: Keep in mind: You don’t need to submit to 50 fests to be selected for 50 fests. Use best judgment when submitting! Save your $$ #filmin140 -3:18 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@Streitberger RT @robertamunroe: Also, consider WATCHING films that *did* get into fests you want to submit to – does yours really compare in quality, story etc. #filmin140 -3:18 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@JeffMorrisJr @BRM can you explain “65% of budget delivered through in-kind sponsorships.” I was a bit late to #filmin140 – thanks! -4:31 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@PretentiousFilm RT @lmcnelly: Annapolis is awesome RT @grking: alternate venues work fine 4 me. I sold a bunch of DVDs at my @PretentiousFilm screening. #filmin140 -8:58 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@docsinprogress RT @FilmThreat: @oxfordfilmfreak: @BRM I think not just for filmmakers – but for audience. Especially Docs – Q&A can be best part at most fests #filmin140 -9:32 AM Oct 14th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @JeffMorrisJr I can answer that question. In-Kind means instead of cash, the sponsorship is rendered in services or materials. #filmin140 -10:09 AM Oct 14th, 2010
