FILM IN 140 PANEL SERIES: I THOUGHT THE PRODUCER JUST FINDS THE MONEY?

On Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 9-10pm EST, our Film in 140 Panel topic was “I Thought The Producer Just Finds The Money?” The transcript is below.

For new (and not so new) screenwriters/directors, that is the thought. Finding money is important, but that isn’t the extent of a producer’s job. They might collaborate on script issues, help structure financial models and business plans, find a first rate (and affordable) cast and crew, deal with mountains of contracts and paperwork, secure locations and permits before even one minute of film is shot. They work tirelessly to get a film shot, off of the hard drive and in front of the public. For independent filmmakers, there’s probably no position more valuable in keeping a project alive and creatively intact. While directors and actors come and go, you’ll often find the same producers appearing over and over again.

PANELISTS

  • Miranda Bailey, (@Ambushent): Producer, actress and documentary filmmaker. Since forming Ambush Entertainment in 2000, Bailey produced the cult hit “Dead & Breakfast” starring Jeremy Sisto, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the 2006 sex comedy “The OH in Ohio”, featuring Danny DeVito, Parker Posey and Paul Rudd. She executive produced 2005′s award-winning critically acclaimed drama “The Squid and the Whale” which was a Best Original Screenplay nominee at the 2006 Academy Awards and 2006 Golden Globe for Best Picture (comedy or musical) nominee. Bailey also produced SUPER.
  • Ted Hope, (@tedhope): A survey of Hope’s films, numbering over sixty, includes many highlights and breakthroughs of the last two decades. As generative as he is with movies, Ted is no less so in business; Ted co-founded and ran the 90′s production & sales powerhouse Good Machine, which he and his partners sold to Universal in 2002. Good Machine was honored by a retrospective at the Museum Of Modern Art in 2001. Hope subsequently co-founded the New York production company This is that with his former assistant Anthony Bregman and Anne Carey. In its eight years, This is that produced eighteen features, receiving numerous awards, including four Academy Award Best Screenplay nominations. One of Hope’s recent productions, SUPER, written and directed by James Gunn, and starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon will be released by Focus Features on April 1.
  • Thomas Woodrow, (@thomaswoodrow:Thomas is a Brooklyn-based independent film producer, whose most recent film in release was BASS ACKWARDS, which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, distributed concurrent with the festival by New Video, in an unprecedented move. Thomas was a 2009/10 Sundance Producing Fellow as well as a 2010 IFP/Rotterdam Producing Fellow. He is in development on a number of projects, including the character-driven comedy THE SKELETON TWINS, Craig Johnson’s follow-up to TRUE ADOLESCENTS, starring Anna Faris, Bill Hader and Mark Duplass as well as several writing projects of his own.
