THE DEATH OF THE SPECIAL EDITION DVD
It’s a scary, worrisome time for DVD lovers. Maybe it was simply my ignorance to what was already an oncoming trend, or the forced blindness of a film geek. But the simple fact remains: True DVD Special Editions are a dying breed.
Now don’t let me get ahead of myself, I’m not pulling out coffin nails just yet. The Special Edition as we know it will survive, but most likely in a neutered, dull form. I’m not referring to specialty companies such as Anchor Bay or The Criterion Collection; no, what I’m focusing on here are the large studio’s quality DVD output, or lack thereof.
While I will expand on this later, let’s start where all good articles should…
