VENUS VS. : Ava DuVernay
Winner of the Best Director Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Ava DuVernay is a writer, producer, director and distributor of independent film.
In addition to making history as the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Prize at Sundance, DuVernay was honored with the 2013 John Cassavetes Spirit Award and the Tribeca Film Institute’s Affinity Award for her second feature film “Middle of Nowhere.”
LLYN FOULKES ONE MAN BAND:Tamar Halpern, Chris Quilty
Artist and one-man-band musician Llyn Foulkes struggles to finish two large-scale paintings, one that costs him his marriage. The film reconstructs Foulkes’s uncompromising, up-and-down career – from abandoning success as a pop artist to being rediscovered at age 77.
Tamar Halpern – Co-Director/Co-Producer
This is Tamar Halpern’s first feature documentary. She has written and directed Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, starring Mira Sorvino, Michael Urie and Joe Pantoliano, as well as Shelf Life, “a whip smart film” (Variety) starring Betsy Brandt of Breaking Bad. Her feature Your Name Here co-starred Llyn Foulkes.
Chris Quilty – Co-Director/Co-Producer
This is Chris Quilty’s first feature documentary. With a degree in international relations from Ohio State University he then, naturally, moved to California to work as a boom operator and production sound mixer in film and TV, and has since worked on Arrested Development, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and Revenge.
Born in Mexico City in 1983, Rodrigo Reyes attended college in UC San Diego, as well as Madrid and Mexico City, earning degree in International Studies. Instead of following this career path, Reyes channeled his multicultural background into becoming a filmmaker.
In 2009 he directed the documentary short The 12th of December, which followed pilgrims to the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe. In 2010 he directed the film 99 Years After the Mexican Revolution and in 2011 he directed the experimental film Memories of the Future. His films have screened throughout Mexico in several documentary film festivals, including DOCSDF, and FICUNAM. In 2010 he was selected to participate in the Berlinale Guadalajara Talent Campus.
OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON: Jeff Broadway
OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON (This Is Stones Throw Records) is a feature-length documentary about avant-garde Los Angeles-based record label Stones Throw Records. Under the direction of founder and world-renowned DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has consistently released critically acclaimed, left-of-center albums since its inception in 1996. Catalog highlights include hip-hop classics like Madvillain’s Madvillainy, Dilla’s Donuts and Quasimoto’s The Unseen; retro-soul hits such as Mayer Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement and Aloe Blacc’s Good Things, Dam-Funk’s boogie-funk masterpiece Toeachizown, and the oddball works of James Pants and Gary Wilson. Drawing on live concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the folks that put Stones Throw on the map, OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON will delve into the label’s enigmatic history, culture and global following.
