1. AFTER AN AUTUMN DAY THAT FELT LIKE SUMMER
To date, the 9/11 attack has baffled filmmakers, especially in view of the commercial failures of well-meaning films like “The Guys” and “11’9″01 — September 11.” Mark L. Feinsod’s “After An Autumn Day That Felt Like Summer” may not be the message that movie audiences want to take away from that event, but it provides a much-needed rude reminder that tragedy can bring out the worst in some people.
There is a Vertigo comic book called “The Filth,” and it deals with the world’s diseased places, mental insanity and some twisted sex. “Bandage-man” would be right at home in its pages.
“Byromania” focuses on poor, unhappy Byron, who is stuck in a cubicle-hell dead-end job he loathes and is married to a sneering virago who physically and emotionally belittles him at every opportunity. Byron is obsessed with the possibility of opening an amusement park built around a serial killer theme, but his attempts to get his wife to share his rapture at serving burgers in the Jeffrey Dahmer Cafe is inevitably met with a slap to the face and a shove out the door.
4. DOWNPOUR RESURFACING
It’s scary to think of where overwhelming anxiety and obsessive compulsions come from, especially when listening to the words of Robert Hall, a man who, within this short piece, tells of how at 32 he discovered that his anxieties were borne of his childhood abduction and sexual abuse, both of which he had repressed the memories of.
5. FIRST MOVEMENT FORM
There are few things more disturbing as stalking…but what happens when the stalker is completely and utterly ignored to the point that his obsession is deflated to bare impotence? This unusual concept is the core of the excellent short “First Movement Form,” which follows the unlikely path-crossing of a celebrated performing artist who is unsuccessfully pursued by a Mozart-obsessed nut.
