BYOD: BRING YOUR OWN DOC – EPISODE 149: “GARNET’S GOLD” DOCUMENTARY FROM 2014 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL

A near-death experience, quest for gold, and the evolution of a very unique documentary are all discussed with BYOD direct from the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Garnet’s Gold is shared by Garnet Frost and director Ed Perkins, who take us through the documentary with the trailer and insight about the search for treasure and meaning in life against adversity.

Watch new episodes of BYOD live each week on Tuesdays at noon on TheLip.TV, or tune in for the archived replay starting here on the following Thursday.

ABOUT BYOD:
BYOD is hosted by Ondi Timoner, director of “DIG!,” “JOIN US” and “WE LIVE IN PUBLIC,” and has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice. Each week the show explores a different documentary filmmaker or aspect of filmmaking, with special guests and a live Q&A– diving deep into creative process and the business realities of producing and distributing films. Ondi shares her insider views, opinions, and personal stories, welcoming audience participation. BYOD aims to entertain, inform, and elevate documentaries in general by bringing attention to films and film makers that deserve exposure.

GUEST BIO:
Twenty years ago, Garnet Frost nearly lost his life hiking near Scotland’s Loch Arkaig. The near-death experience still haunts him to this day, and, in particular, a peculiar wooden stick he discovered serendipitously right before he was rescued. Believing the staff (as he calls it) is actually a marker for a fortune hidden nearly 300 years ago, Garnet embarks on a treasure hunt to search for the lost riches. But beneath the search for gold, lies a poignant pursuit for life’s meaning and inspiration.

Ed Perkins has directed, filmed, and edited for National Geographic, The New Yorker, The Guardian, and Focus Features. His student documentary For God’s Sake won ‘Best in Show’ at the Carolina Film Festival and The Eva Marie Saint-Jeffrey Hayden Humanitas Award. He then developed and directed a series of TV documentaries for National Geographic Channel as well as directing the behind-the-scenes documentaries for Project Nim, The Eagle, the BAFTA-winning The Imposter, and the Academy Award®-winning Searching for Sugarman. Garnet’s Gold is his first feature-length documentary.
