This year’s festival included a record number of 80 presentations comprised of shorts, documentaries and feature films from Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Taiwan, Italy, India, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, Norway, Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States. A record number of films made their North American premieres during the Festival, including “Tan de Repente” (Suddenly), “Eden’s Curve”, “Lisistrata”, “Valentin”, “Do I Love You”, “A World of Love”, “The Gift” and “Los Novios Bulgaros” (Bulgarian Lovers). Other films enjoyed their East Coast or Florida premieres.
The winners are:
Juried Award for Best Feature-$1,000 ^ “Die Mommie Die,” directed by Mark Rucker ^ An outrageous melodramatic parody starring Sundance winner Charles Busch, Jason Priestley and Natasha Lyonne.
Juried Award for Best Documentary-$1,000 ^ “All About My Father” (Alt Om Min Far), directed by Even Benestad ^ A bold and moving documentary about a transvestite father directed by his son.
Juried Award for Best Short ^ “Hard Fat,” directed by Frederic Moffet ^ A documentary about men who gain weight as a sexual fetish for others.
Special Jury Award for the First Time Feature in the Spirit of Independent Film ^ “Politics of Fur,” directed by Laura Nix ^ A mangled web of domination, jealousy, control and subservience between a powerful female music executive and a nihilistic punk rocker.
Audience Favorite-$1,000 ^ “Tipping The Velvet,” directed by Geoff Sax and presented by Sally Head Prods. / BBC ^ The three part BBC mini-series from the acclaimed Sarah Waters novel about a poor British girl and her love for a popular gender bending music hall star.
