11th July, 2006 from 7pm. Held annually in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, for one glorious jam-packed winter’s night we have The Angry Film Festival. Founded by angry filmmaker Tom Vogel after he found it hard to exhibit his short film “The Angry Penguin”. Angry inflatable penguins + angry filmmaker = The Angry Film Festival.
Now in its fourth year, The Angry Film Festival has garnered a solid reputation for itself as a highly reputable film festival for several short films each year. Sponsors include Movie Extra, Buena Vista International, Lonely Planet, Filmink, Encore Magazine, Hopscotch, Film Australia and Polyester Books. This year they had an overwhelming response for their call for entries.
Highlighting this year’s festival is the short film “Perdition” directed by Matt Carter, plus seventeen others.
In the current climate of more films and filmmakers than there are festivals in Australia, it is important for festivals such as this one to get as much support from the filmmakers and the public as they possibly can.
I caught up with festival founder Tom Vogel while attending this year’s MUFF whom I had never met before in person, but however did have email contact with him when he expressed interest in auditioning for a role in my upcoming self-funded short film. In fact he is auditioning for us the day after this year’s Angry Film Festival so we’ll see how he pulls up. The great thing about being involved in any facet of the Melbourne film scene is that it is such a small community that you know about almost everyone, so when you eventually meet you need no introduction.
So get behind Melbourne’s newest film festival and enjoy an entertaining evening watching some of the greatest shorts this country has to offer.
