2010 MIAMI GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES OPENING, CLOSING AND CENTERPIECE SCREENINGS

The 12th Annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF), running April 23 – May 2, 2010, has announced its official selections for Opening Night, Centerpiece and Closing Night films, as listed below from the official press release:

OPENING NIGHT GALA

I KILLED MY MOTHER
(Xavier Dolan, 2009, Canada) Florida Premiere
April 23 at 7:30p, Gusman Center of the Performing Arts

An official selection of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, this comedy-drama turns it’s lens on precocious and gay teen Hubert’s (writer, director and actor Xavier Dolan) comically challenging relationship with his mother Chantel (great Quebec actress Anne Dorval). But as their bickering reaches a fevered pitch, they realize that a seismic shift is about to affect their relationship: a relationship that has been all they have known for sixteen years. Filmed and created when Dolan was only 19-years-old, the film has garnered international acclaim, including winning 3 awards at the Cannes’ Directors Fortnight in 2009.

CENTERPIECE GALAS

THE FOUR-FACED LIAR
(Jacob Chase, 2010, US) East Coast Premiere
April 28 at 7:30 pm at the Regal South Beach Cinema

Fresh from its World Premiere at 2010 Slamdance, meet New Yorkers Bridget, a lesbian, and her straight roommate, Trip who are best friends. One night at their favorite Greenwich Village bar, they meet straight-laced couple Molly and Greg. But Bridget and Molly discover that their attraction to each other may lead to something more, launching both of them into a refreshingly energetic journey filled with burgeoning romance and sexual discovery. The film is based on a play by Marja-Lewis Ryan, who also wrote the screenplay and co-stars as Bridget.

BEAR NATION
(Malcolm Ingram, 2010, Canada) East Coast Premiere
April 28 at 8:00 pm Regal South Beach Cinema

Winner of the 2006 MGLFF Juried Award for Best Documentary for “small town gay bar,” filmmaker Ingram returns to Miami with his newest film, a touching portrait of community, camaraderie, and brotherhood in a subculture within the gay subculture: bears. The film made it’s World Premiere at the recent 2010 SXSW Film Festival and features interviews with music legend Bob Mould and filmmaker/”bear” idol Kevin Smith.

CLOSING NIGHT GALA

LA MISSION
(Peter Bratt, 2009, US) Florida Premiere
May 2 at 6:30p, Gusman Center of the Performing Arts

This 2009 Sundance hit is an emotionally charged journey into the heart of San Francisco’s Mexican and Latino community. Recovering alcoholic and former inmate Che (an amazing performance by Benjamin Bratt) is an inked-up cholo and widow raising his only teen-aged son Jes. When he discovers that Jes is gay, Che kicks the young man out of his house. Alone and vulnerable for the first time, Che realizes that he has to work out his struggles with his son, his community, and eventually himself.

The full lineup will be announced on Tuesday, March 23 at the festival’s official website.
