The “centerpiece” event on [ October 14th ] is a tribute to Sean Penn, whose two-decade career in independent film has seen the actor grow into a variety of tough roles, the most remarkable of which is his “Dead Man Walking” star turn, where the actor walked away with an Oscar nod. At the end of the Festival, on [ October 21st ] , actress Shirley MacLaine will receive a special mayorial award. Other stars slated to participate include Gena Rowlands (who will present Penn’s honor, the 10th Annual John Cassavetes Award), and actors Peter Falk and Seymour Cassel, who will preside on a panel discussing the life and works of Cassavetes — a man who is considered by many to be the “godfather of independent cinema.”
