BLAME CANADA!
What futuristic renegade robot wouldn’t want to attack Canada? That’s the question answered in “Freeworld,” screening at the decidedly un-Canadian Tampere International Film Festival and Film Market in Tampere, Finland March 8-12 2000.
Shot by CBC-TV vet Pat “Flick” Harrison, “Freeworld” takes place in the year 2023, after Canada has been annexed by America (for the production tax break, no doubt). Doko, a failed draft-dodger, and Hedwing, a drafted student, track down a renegade robot (designed by X-Files special makeup effects artist Leanne Rae Podavin). They’ll take on the Army of the 49th Parallel and the French-Canadian resistance along the way.
