During the HDFEST 2001 Awards Ceremony held at The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, four awards were given, recognizing achievement in high-definition filmmaking. A prestigious panel of judges recognized significant achievements in HD filmmaking at a special awards ceremony, awarding prizes to “bigLove,” “What’s Eating You…a serious comedy” and “Grandmother.” HDFEST 2001 featured eleven projects shot exclusively in high-definition format. The event also included exhibitors featuring the latest innovations in high-definition hardware and software, six educational panels and seminars, plus a special event screening of an episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” projected in HD before an audience, a first for the hit CBS television series.
The HDFEST 2001 Admit One “Best HD Feature” Award went to “What’s Eating You?… a serious comedy” directed by Jonathan West and written by Leslie Ackerman. The feature length comedy, which also stars Leslie Ackerman, made its LA premiere at HDFEST 2001. Mr. West is also the cinematographer for CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” “bigLove,” directed by Leif Tilden, walked away with two awards at HDFEST 2001. The short starring Sam Rockwell (Charlie’s Angels, The Green Mile) and Emma Roberts (Blow) was clearly a favorite among the judges as it received both the HDFEST 2001 Plus 8 Video “Best HD Short” Award and the HDFEST 2001 Digital Projection “Best Director of an HD Film” Award. “Grandmother,” making its US premiere at HDFEST 2001, was awarded the HDFEST 2001 Digital Projection “Best Cinematography in an HD Film” Award. The short was directed by Bonnie Thompson and based on a retelling of a Native American creation myth by Paula Gunn Allen. The cinematographer for the film was Jim Likowski.
