Heed our warning, if attending this festival, you’re gonna want to watch where you step as not to slip in the hipness oozing from it. If you fall and hurt yourself everyone will laugh at you! On its third year now, the Silver Lake Film Festival will take place September 12-21 at different venues located throughout the Silver Lake area, featuring Justin Lin’s hotly debated Better Luck Tomorrow.
This year’s ten day festival boasts highlights such as tributes to Allison Anders and Shirley Knight, the Los Angeles premiere of Claire Denis’ erotic feature starring Vincent Gallo, Trouble Every Day, the Los Angeles premiere of the Sundance hit Acts of Worship by filmmaker Rosemary Rodriguez and a rare screning of “The Cheat” starring Silent Era superstar Sessue Hayakawa and featuring an original score created especially for the screening.
Concurrent with the festival this year will be a music festival featuring the best of the local punk rock scene. Festival Co-Director Greg Ptacek says this year’s Music Fest will kick-off with a program entitled “L.A. Punk Revisited: Along the Chung King Road,” which will use film and live music programming to contrast today’s punk-art scene in Chinatown with its last heyday in the early 1980s. “In the early 1980s,” says Ptacek, “the anarchistic punk scene exploded in Los Angeles. Among the hotbeds of the punk music-and-culture movement was Chinatown, where music clubs The Hong Kong Café and Madame Wong’s played host to X, the Circle Jerks, Black Flag and other leading punk bands.” Another highlight of the music festival will be a performance by San Francisco based punk band Tribe 8 on September 15th, which will follow a documentary made on the band.
