I am gradually entering the world of music for INDIE films with the help of the Film Music Institute and others - even starting a film music festival (I have run a chamber music festival for 20 years and if one can run a chamber music festival and survive, the possibilities should be endless...).
The point of this thread: I want to know how each of you indie filmmakers choose your music or construct your music or whatever you do to get the music into your film, and literally, when and how do you add it?

I use this company, Gracy Studios (http://www.gracystudios.com) , the main guy, Steve Gracy, is fantastic.
He scored my feature and two of my three shorts. I make the movie, then either send him a copy or just ask for a certain type of song (for the shorts) and give him a length and voila, the music, she's done.
He worked with me on price, since I'm a credit-card producer, and everyone who watches the movies asks about and compliments the music.
A real professional, and he's done everything from really creepy horror stuff to 80's cheesy workout music!
If I didn't have him, though, I wouldn't really know where to look. The music adds SO much to the movies... both songs and scoring.
Where do people normally find composers?

I am a former musician myself, so I generally compose my own stuff, or I go to former band mates or musicians that I know tog et original music. My cousin and his band, THE LUCKY 13 BAND (www.thelucky13band.com) provide most of my contemporary songs, and Jeff Krider provides the score.
I also have a link for people in need of Royalty Free music for their Indie Movies : http://sonnyboo.com/music/music.htm
They aren't great, but they are all mine & free to use for anyone in a movie.
Using original music frees you up from any hassles when it comes time to deal with any distributors or any kind of problems that may arise if you are STEALING copyrighted music without permission for use in your movie.
