Don't get too excited. It is a very limited version. For one thing, there are only two video tracks and most of the other features have been heavily snipped.
On the one the hand, you can say "but it's free!".
But is this bare bones freebie version any better than most of the low/mid end apps you can download off the net? My guess is no.
It's still nice that you can try out the interface for free, but don't start thinking that everyone can now have their own Avid. It's kind of useless.

This is free, as opposed to the $995 version. It ain't fancy, but you aren't going to beat it for free. Avid is still the industry standard, until Final Cut Pro takes over int he next year or so as the most used NLE program (that's non linear editing).
I personally use Adobe Premiere Pro, and have no real interest in Avid. But these are preferential things. It's like saying which paint brush is the "best". It's whatever works for you. This version of Avid is free and not many people can complain about a free piece of software.

It's nice to see, but I think this may be a case of too little too late from AVID. As someone who has too many editors in their circle of friends, I can attest that FCP is indeed taking over.
That Premiere Pro looks really nice too though. I am just a geek for all this stuff. I wish I could afford to play with all of it.

I'm not a fan of avid myself. It's kind of simplified and not too adept.
But I won't complain about a free legal copy of it to try out.
Personally, I like Adobe Premiere & it has a bad rep as too simple, but that will soon change with Adobe Premiere Pro. It's just as good as Final Cut Pro, just not available for Mac.

I personally have liked Premiere in its past versions and I hear that Pro blows those out of the water. I think the perception of it will change with this new version. I am all for competing products when it comes to software because it forces everyone involve to continually improve their products.

I'm glad everybody here acknowledges that AVID is done and has been done. Personally, I use Discreet Logic and belive that anyone who still prefers AVID has never tried Discreet. Even though Discreet did abondon EDIT.

I used EDIT DV briefly. It has a decent interface, but all Non Linear Editing programs a just brushes in the hands of artists.
I finally got Adobe Premiere Pro this week and it doesn't work with my DV Raptor card, so it's a very expensive coaster for my Mountain Dew.

Actually I was talking about Discreet Logic Edit 6.0. I'm not sure who make's Edit DV. That's not a discreet product is it?
