MAKE THE MOVIE THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE!

There are a zillion low-to-no budget filmmakers running around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to figure out what the latest "hot" trend or genre is.

Heck, folks are still making "Blair Witch" type "kids-have-mysteriously-disappeared-BUT-WE-FOUND-THEIR-CAMCORDER-FOOTAGE!" flicks.

Just make something that YOU want to make! Chances are, if YOU don't really care about it, no one else will.

Opinions, anyone?

The only problem is people don't always KNOW what they want to make.

They want to make a movie. They like this or that movie. But they don't know what THEY want to do.

Of course you have to factor in stuff like talent, writers, actors, money, etc. blah blah blah

But how many people know exactly the film they want to make and (assuming that the film is actually good in the first place) have the talent/experience to pull it off.

I think its great that people make shitty movies. Few people try to create crap, but you do learn the most from it.

Just don't expect people to have to sit through it!

filmmakers want to think they're decent actors
actors what to think they are good directors
producers want to think they are good writers

It just goes on and on.

#1 Get a good, scaled down story.

#2 Find some really talented local actors.

#3 Organize a crew to film it.

Very seldom are all 3 done.

MAKE THE MOVIE THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE!

Well, we made it in 1990. Without any budget and just armed with two (then state of the art) Hi8-Cams, a lot of enthusiasm and time.

It was a dream-project and it played -absent from a intro and outro wich where each exactly 3 Minutes long- exclusivly in a phone booth for about an hour. It turned the festival cycle here in germany relativly successfull and then it got lost in time.

But that was it - no success, no fame, no offers. A friend who also was involved is now shooting Daily Soaps for TV, our main actor is still doing commercials, Iīm still dreaming of a white christmas. ;(

It doesnīt work out always, but at least we tried and we donīt cheated ourself. Iīm still proud of our little gem even if i only have some crappy VHS-copy of it and show it around from time to time.

Probably we had done better when jumping the train then and make a commercial movie (add some machete wielding maniac or the then popular Nightmare Killer), but hey - we didnīt want to destroy our dream.

I think youīre right - try it, shoot it, get the good feeling of fulfilling your dream. If it turns out to be another Evil Dead your lucky - if it turns out to be another lost movie at least you have something to be proud of for the rest of your life. :)

the problem with the majority of 'art' is that your average enthusiest just doesn't have anything to say, either in the form or the narrative.

Make the movie you want to make, but if it sucks, start listening to people.

George Lucas, I am talking to you.
