I just noticed this on my DVD of it... dammmmmmmmmmn.
The United-States is a weird weird place sometimes. I love you guys, but some of your fellow citizens are real prudes.
Amelie is rated R in the States (wasn't is almost Rated NC17?) It's rated PG14a in Canada... and in Quebec?
It's rated, yes G. As in, GENERAL. As in, EVERYONE CAN SEE IT.
Sometimes I think the Saxon prudery goes deep. The Brits and Canucks aren't as bad as the Americans but damn...
I mean Amelie is THE most innofensive film I've ever seen. It's very sweet and gentle. It's like a children's movie for adults. An R-rating is just nuts.

You're right! How totally ridiculous!
I LOVE this movie, and there's really nothing offensive in this sweet, quirky film... oh wait, must be the brief scenes in the sex shop. Yep, we Americans can handle violence of all sorts, but show a dildo or an erotic dancer (or Janet Jackson's right boob), and we freak!
Ah well, the puritan ethic runs deep here & we need to get over it! C'est la vie!

It got an R-rating because it was French. Any film out of France gets an R rating. I think it is some kind of rule.

Well, not only because of the sex shop, but also because of the 10-second sequence where Amelie was counting off who in Paris was having an orgasm at a certain point. Stupid MPAA.

When up here, Amelie's rating was actually AA which is Canada's version of PG-13. An amazing movie which is one of the best editions to my limited DVD collection...
A quick 411 on Canada's ratings:
General - Considered to be suitable for all ages. No restrictions on viewing. The material does not contain elements that might be too intense or offensive for younger viewers.
Parental Guidance - All ages may attend. However, parents should know that the theme or content of the film may be more mature than in general films. It may be more appropriate for those 12 years of age and over.
Adult Accompaniment - Considered to be suitable for those 14 years and older. Those under 14 years must be escorted by a parent or adult. Subject matter or language could be controversial or offensive. The film may contain scenes of limited violence, the use of weapons without excessive bloodletting, restrained portrayal of accident or disaster. There may be scenes of casual or brief nudity, romantic involvement that is not sexually explicit where participants are at least partially clothed; some coarse or vulgar language.
Restricted - Considered to be suitable for those 18 years and older. Those under 18 years must be escorted by a parent or legal guardian. The film may contain excessive use of foul or offensive language and may depict extreme violence, horror, graphic sexual activity.
There is also an X - rating which basically means you're banned from showing the film anywhere. The last time I think this was actually used was in Manitoba for the Rosie O'Donnell movie 'Exit To Eden'.
