Personally, there is only one CGI character that appeals to me Gollum... all the others are pains in the ass

What about the MCP? That was a badass piece of software, man!

Which one was that? Was that the one with certain "AI" qualities employed in LotR:TTT and RotK to generate armies?

I believe the program WETA used in LotR is called "Massive." Seedy, if I'm not mistaken, is referring to the the Master Control Program in "Tron."

CGI is definetly a good tool when used correctly - example GOLEM..

but, i think the problem is most people who are making these characters in movies are comp. geeks with little artistic backround... so the characters end up looking awful and moving akwardly...i was asked to take on MAYA because i have a strong art back ... but when i started using the program i noticed it was geared for comp. geeks and not for artisits ... so i dropped it. its just not the same sitting in front of a screen for hours as it is using your hands to create something.
all this is definetly changing due to its popularity but, i am not in favor of CG taking over animation. stop animation, puppets and 2D will always be the best.

Will there be or can there even be a special effects man known for his artistry anymore?

Ray Harryhausen, Tom Savini, Kevin Yagher, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin

Will geeks know their fx artists by name in the future?

I like CG makeup a lot though. Battle damaged Arnold in T3, Tom Cruise in Interview...Vampire, the partially disassembled robots in AI, the recomposing Mummy...

Those artists weren't CGI artists but very innovative artists

FX used to be hand made by one person or a team led by one visionary.
You could recognize some FX artisits work by its style. Just like recoginizing a painter by his brushstroke.
I see a danger, though, that software would be a bigger star in the future than the artist.
It could be good for storytelling though.
When FX is indiscernible from reality, FX extravaganzas wont matter for shit. Audiences will expect things to look realistic.
For example, I haven't paid for a Star Wars movie in years. Lucas thinks this is his best work ever because of the FX. They're crap.

Also, anyone who says I'll see episode 3 can cram it with walnuts, because I ddin't even see episode 2.
