I just started at college this year, taking a television course and I was interested in organizing a film club or society for movie screenings and public speaking events. Does anyone know how I can go about doing something like this?

Hi, Is there a film department at your school? If there is try talking to the head of the department. I'm sure he or she can give you some advice as to how to go about starting a film club at your particular school. Also, you could also just find a bunch of your friends or put up flyers for others who are interested in film and set up an unofficial film club on your campus. Good luck!

Actually, there's no film department at all. Just a broadcasting dept. I was thinking of getting a petition signed to get a film club or organization. I've already written to the student's association, so I guess I could already be on my way.

dont let the man & other persons of authority "boss you around."
my university had a student filmmaking organization as well as a student run television channel. i was in the filmmaking org for 2 yrs, by the end of the second year, the filmmaking body had merged with the tv. SGA didnt understand the fact that the reason we filmmakers didnt produce the same abundance of product as the tv folks is b/c it takes a lot more time to complete & edit a movie.

The University I went to had a great Student Union group that put on "drive-in" movies on the Student Union lawn and had great films every weekend in the student union auditorium. Just find some friends interested in film and get on the student union student group. They usually have a budget to work with and with a few people interested in helping you out, you guys can make some things happen.
