Is anyone else freaked out by how scary-skinny actresses are nowadays?
Do only geriatric has-beens like Harrison Ford (with Calista Flockhart) and Jack Nicholson (with Lara Flynn Boyle) like the bony type?
Even the ever-lovely Salma Hayek and Jennifer Connelly (I mean, did you see what was left of her in "The Hulk"?) are trimming down too much.
I'm not a huge fan of R&B, but I gotta give a thumbs up to Beyonce. She's still got some curves on her.

You know, I think of Jennifer Connelly and I'm reminded of the first time I saw her, or at least became aware of her. A knock-out 21 year old Jennifer Connelly seductively riding a supermarket carousel horse in the ads for Career Opportunities. Lifelong lust at first site. Now, after seeing The Hulk, well, let's just say that she isn't quite Skeletor - I reserve that title for Lara Flynn Boyle - but if Dennis Hopper were to make a sequel to The Hot Spot I don't think I'd greet the sight of a nekkid Jennifer Connelly with the same enthusiasm that I did the first time around.

Yeah, I'd go see a remake of "The Hot Spot" with the same scene in a heartbeat - scary skinny and all.

What's worse is when an actress gets a decent gig and THEN decides to get scary-skinny.
Leah Remini was HOT on the first season of King of Queens. Then she went on that "Hollywood Diet" and now she's just another bony gash from Brooklyn.
People like Lara Flynn Boyle have always been skeletal, so I can't really fault them for the way they look. But when they purposely emaciate themselves, it turns my stomach. If I want to sleep with someone like that, I'll just duct-tape a Fleshlight and two water balloons to a broomstick and have at it.

Actually, my first intro to Lara Flynn Boyle that I remember was "The Temp." She was a little one then, but she still had breasts and some hips. She was hot in the pool scene.
She must look back on that and say, "Oh my God! I was a colassal 115 pound tub of lard."

I come from the "Twin Peaks" camp. She and Sherilyn Fenn were spank-fuel for months. Even under those bulky sweaters, you could tell Lara was a buffalo wing. (very little meat but really hot)

Yeahhhhhh.... Sherilyn Fenn. Now she was AWESOME! Did you ever see her in "Two Moon Junction"? Really dumb movie, but she has an OH MY GOD! nude scene in the end. Definitely worth the rental.
That and "Boxing Helena." And to think... Bill Paxton was paid to do the sex scene with her.
Sherilyn Fenn never went scary skinny, just lost some of her sexiness over the years.

Boxing Helena made me wanna puke. Not just because it was so FUCKING bad, but because of the talent and money that went into it. Such a waste.
I saw Sherilyn's Playboy layout. That's all I needed. Nobody's looked hotter in B&W.
But Ms. Fenn DID do the Hollywood shrinkage to a certain extent. Saw her on a sitcom a couple years ago ("Two Guys & a Girl"), and she was looking kinda ropy. Sorta had that beginning-of-a-wattle goin' on.

some women are slender all over. some women are slender in certain places. some women are nicely hourglass & others are rectangular thru the torso. some women are deceptively thin. like me ^0^
ive polled like every guy friend & acquaintance of mine in my 4 yrs at university & the consensus was that theyd take the Rita Hayworths over Audrey Hepburns. i can totally understand why Rita would be on their Top Five List, but if i had a magical powers, i'd snap my hands & look like Audrey.
most females that ive directly asked or have observed seem to prefer the slender woman over than the voluptuous one.
of course there are exceptions.

Part of it is what the person looks like naturally. Someone who is naturally very slim doesn't look that bad when they go skinny because that's their natural shape. The problem trend in Hollywood and elsewhere is that naturally valuptuous women are making themselves scary skinny.
Look at Debra Messing. In the 1st season of "Will & Grace," she had natural curves. Still slender, but hot as can be. (I actually used to watch the show with the sound off to see her.) Now she looks dead, she's lost so much weight.
My theory is that it is perpetuated by the fashion industry, which is run by women and gay men. Why does anyone listen to them as to what men like to see. Check out porno, which is totally made with men in mind. You don't see that many scary-skinny women in porno.

thats just it, though. men like flesh, women (for the most part) dont. and many of them would rather look good to themselves and lose the lbs than look good to men. if and when they do wish to make their male consorts happy, its usually with implants.
but whats the motivation for actresses to slough off the weight? competition for roles maybe?

What about Matthew Perry from Friends? His weight fluctuates from season to season of that show. It's downright scary.

ive heard his weight fluctuations had to deal with on-again, off-again battles with drugs.

Not just on the show. His weight fluctuated during "Serving Sara" (for the 17 people who saw that movie) almost as much as Rosie O'Donnell's does in "Exit to Eden."

It must be a men/women thing. From a guy's POV, they make themselves look good for the ladies, not for themselves or other men.
But then again, why do women like thin better? Why do they like the slender look? Guys like flesh because, hey, flesh feels good. To quote "Spinal Tap": The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'. (Okay, I know that's crass, but it illustrates a point.) What's so appealing about the slender look to women themselves?
As for the actresses' motivations, I think it's driven by the media, mainly the tabloids and fashion mags. I remember a People magazine spread earlier this year with before/after pictures of women who gave birth.
Not just competition for roles, but to look good in the media's eyes. And this is driven by the fashion industry - again run by women and gay men.

im not entirely sure why. but, as things probably go back to the fashion industry, a slender person looks nice in just about any article of clothing. a slender & 5'10 or taller woman also exudes a bit of an androgynous look...like david bowie. when a women neutralizes her sex, maybe she feels less objectified? (im just hypothesizing at this point).
but. theres slender (Charlize Theron in certain films, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Pfeiffer). & then theres "good lord, child, i can count your vertebrae!" (Calista & Lara Flynn....and i say Britney Murphy b/c she looked completely different when she was Tai in Clueless).
Rebecca Romijn Stamos looks fabulous. Slender-esque but not Skeletor. Monica Bellucci ....wow.

one of my girl friends explained to me that the reason all the female models in the fashion mags are unearthly thin is b/c theyre supposed to look like hangers. clothes allegedly look the best on hangers. thus, the thinner your limbs & general frame, the more hanger-like you become. im not so sure i buy it, though. i mean, thin women do tend to look "good" in any article of clothing--regardless how hideous the pattern.

I'm a gay man....don't blame me for all the toothpicks walking around ;) I think women like Salma Hayek and Kate Winslett look much better than some bag of bones.
I believe the worst is Lara Flynn Boyle. She is fucking gross and looks to have the body of an eleven year old boy. Scary. The sad thing is when she was on "Twin Peaks"she was pretty.

the playboy centerfolds from 1953 to present... i've come to the conclusion that i personally don't care if ladies are deathly thin or shapely... as long as they are all natural ( no add ons or paint jobs )
