Kirby Dick’s touching and even disturbing documentary Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist focuses mainly on the last couple of years in performance artist Bob Flanagan’s life as he loses his struggle with Cystic Fibrosis. Not the cheeriest subject matter for sure, but Dick’s film also reveals Flanagan’s amazing life as a masochistic performance artist. By the film’s teary end, there’s no question as to why Bob built such a major fan following, or why RE/Search devoted an entire book on him, or why Trent Reznor chose him to appear in his “Happiness in Slavery” music video, or simply why he will always be remembered and loved as Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist.Originally released to art house theaters in 1997, Sick is finally getting a DVD release on September 23, 2003, through Lions Gate. We spoke with filmmaker Kirby Dick about what it took to make this film, as well as what we should expect from the DVD.
