THE INCREDIBLE HULK
by Zack Haddad
2008, Rated PG-13, 114 minutes, Marvel Enterprises
I’m going to get this out of the way now: I have loved the Hulk since I was a kid. He’s my favorite character in the Marvel Universe but I assure you that I will not be biased when it comes to this film (well, maybe a little). That said, lets talk about the decently-executed version of the Hulk.

The film opens up with Bruce Banner (Ed Norton) living incognito while General Ross (William Hurt) devises a plan to bring Banner back to America so he can dissect him for Hulk’s DNA. That’s where bad ass Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) comes in, who leads the team sent to bring Banner in, and eventually is turned into the Abomination for his trouble. The story is simple enough; starts strong yet loses much of Act One’s steam by the end. That doesn’t mean the script is really bad, it’s just it isn’t as well done as say “Iron Man.”

It seems that the biggest issue that fan boys and film-goers alike had with Ang Lee’s bloated 2003 version is that there wasn’t enough Hulk smashing stuff. This film is much different. The action scenes are well done and sprinkled throughout the film so every time Banner Hulks out, it’s a welcome balance of mayhem instead of feeling like too much or too little.

The first half of the film delivers on a well done chase film. It’s almost in the vein of a Bourne film with Banner evading Blonsky and the rest of his tactical unit, but then that dynamic disappears the second the film focuses more on the Hulk. Don’t get me wrong, the CGI work in this film is well done, yet I really enjoyed Norton’s performance and hated to see him take a back seat to his computer counter part.

But fans rejoice, this film has some great nods to the television show. Whether it be using the music from the show to playing with the “you won’t like me when I’m angry line,” this film is extremely faithful to the subject matter. So that said, I will go on record to say that this is Louis Leterrier’s best film. I can’t wait to see what this guy does next because seeing how he handled this one shows that he has great potential.

My major issue with this film, though, had to be the ending. I won’t give it away but I couldn’t believe how the fight ended between the Hulk and the Abomination. I can buy Gamma-radiated men and all that, but given the way the fight ended... it just didn’t seem logical to me. But other than that, I didn’t have too many problems with the film.

So take it as you will. I have stated how big a fan I am but that still can’t hide the fact that this is a decent film. In the end, don’t go see this if you are looking for an intellectual film. If you're into seeing some fun, mindless action in a faithful Marvel comic adaptation for a couple hours, then go see the Hulk smash some stuff.

Does the Hulk talk in this one? Because to me that was the biggest problem with Ang Lee's version, (besides the lame freudian conflict) was that the main character didn't speak. Even though Hulk's thoughts are simple and his wants are obvious (to smash), the story doesn't work if he is simply an inscrutable monster, a CGI effect without personality. The movie is called the Incredible Hulk, not the Incredible Bruce Banner. So Banner isn't an extremely interesting character, let alone a super-hero. The Hulk is, and from what I see in the trailer, Hulk 2 keeps Hulk mute. Why? I don't understand why the Hulk isn't given a voice.

I think the reason why the Hulk never talks in the movies is because it'd appear to cheesy. In the comics it's completely fine, but in film it's just ... I don't know. Like in Spider-Man 3 when Venom talked. Is it just me or was that not really lame. It was alright when his mask was off and he talked, but ... yeah that movie wasn't very good anyway.

Sigh, I can't believe I am stooping to this level of nerdom but here we go. The Hulk can't talk because he is intelligent enough to form sentences. He can say stuff like "Hulk Smash" and "Puny Banner" but that's about it. Which is a great juxtaposition to Banner since he's a genius and all that. End of nerdyness...

The Hulk DOES talk. He mutters "Leave me Alone..." As for "The incredible Hulk"? It was utterly mediocre. Not horrible, but nothing to write home about either. It was underwhelming, the action scenes was okay, and the big showdown took too damn long.

And yet inevitably the Hulk does manage to build the ability to talk and form sentences thus turning him into a deadlier monster in the long run. I'm not anxious to see that, mind you, but the Hulk does eventually form intelligent thought. I'm just not a Hulk fan. I mean the character just isn't interesting enough to make a franchise. I think both movies are enough for a while.

I -think- you can maybe spoil a bit of the end for one reason: It showed on TV trailers: Tony Stark appears at the end of the movie with the idea of creating a "team". (which isn't exactly spoiling your problem with the end of fighting sequel). Now based on that information, I can tell you what I think it maybe the biggest let down of all hero movies: giant robots, aliens, parallel universes (o god Marvel loves throwing that crap at us) and lots and lots and lots of special effects and super villains/heroes in one movie. Result: A big pile of bad plots that will lead us to the horror of Spiderman 3 (if you liked that movie, you are probably a fun of Tim Burton's Batman movies), which is, you know it, just senseless crap with lots of characters that can be later on sold as merchandise. I -HOPE- for a miracle where they can actually tie plots in several movies rather then rush it all in one "Avengers" movie, but since I'm probably wrong, I should just accept that these movies are more and more being targeted to 10 years old kids that will love asking their parents for a "Samuel Stearns" action figure

A vast improvement over the last one, I think most will agree. Zero, I repeat, ZERO hulk dogs. If you like comic book movies that try to take themselves seriously I think you'll enjoy this one.

Much better than the first one (which isn't saying that much, I know). But this was actually quite entertaining.
