Minor spoilage! In a virtually packed AMC movie theatre in metro-Atlanta, I heartily chuckled and gasped while watching "The Happening," M. Night Shyamalan's new tossed-genre escapade. Starring Mark Wahlberg as science teacher Elliot Moore and Zooey Deschanel as his somewhat reluctant wife, Alma, "The Happening" whips up a menacing force that causes a forty-eight hour wave of suicides in the northeast region of the United States. Joined by survivors they encounter along the trail of evacuation, husband-and-wife and Jess [ (Ashlyn Sanchez), the daughter of Elliot’s colleague (John Leguizamo) ], must figure out an explanation for what has been happening in neighboring states and how to stay alive. In light of increased organized efforts in the past few years to reduce, re-use, and recycle, and to avoid taking natural resources for granted (or relying too heavily on them), it shouldn't be that difficult to make an educated guess as to the identity of this film's "monster." If you've seen any promotional videos of "The Happening," you shouldn’t be surprised to learn rather early in this nature revenge picture that "it’s the plants." Specifically, an airborne toxin causes “confused speech,” “disorientation,” which leads to self-termination. Mark Wahlberg's manner of speaking may seem wooden, corny, and occasionally overly diplomatic; and Zooey Deschanel appears offbeat and self-conscious a la "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" (Garth Jennings, 2005). Considering the film’s themes, however, their performances are purposefully out-of-sync or out of place for a science thriller. Moreover, the result of this mismatch resembles B-movie comedy, which counteracts the anticipated and the sudden appearances of onscreen acts of self-inflicted violence. As writer and one of the producers, Shyamalan's creative control remains intact. "The Happening" differs from the rest of his filmography ("The Sixth Sense", "Unbreakable", "Signs", "The Village", and "Lady in the Water") in the precise development of suspense (breadcrumb-trail-of-clues), viewer identification (do we really care?), and adherence to genre conventions (nature revenge story with comic-drama performances), but the deviations do not outnumber the similarities. The viewer is still expected or strongly encouraged to pay extra attention to the significance of repeated images and phrases. Although "The Happening" lacks the crescendo of a third-act plot twist, the audience can nevertheless experience a certain satisfaction in cracking the verdant enemy’s method of attack—something the characters have yet to understand. Whether you’re a casual or an ardent follower of M. Night Shyamalan's films, "The Happening" could alienate or dominate your thinking cap. Remember—it's perfectly acceptable to laugh one second and shriek the next.

I fucking loved this. Four out of five stars for me. A wonderfully paced, creative end of the world thriller that's a bit of an ecologically conscious plea to us. I loved it. |

Zero out of five for me. I haven't actually seen it, I'm basing that on everything else he's ever made. |

To Isaac: That is some ignorance right there. So, you're telling us that you would give anything M. Night makes a zero because of how bad "Unbreakable", "The Sixth Sense", and "Signs" were? (*Sarcasm*) And beyond that, the way I feel about it is that most people somehow feel betrayed after "The Village". Having that rug pulled out from under you must have really destroyed your perception of what movies are all about. His movies are ALL very involved. Even "Lady in the Water", although very cheesy, was a well written and engaging film. I always have a great time watching his movies. To this day, "Signs" is the creepiest movie I've ever seen. I think viewers like Isaac Borgo are what will kill M. Night's movies. Everybody feels so scorned. And the idea that all of his movies have that kind of twist is preposterous. I'll give you 2 movies: "The Sixth Sense" and "The Village". That's it. So, supposing that ALL of his movies revolve around such a premise is ludicrous. Just like going to see the new "Indiana Jones" flick with the intent to spot all of the CGI is a bad idea, so is going to a Shyamalan movie with the idea that he's trying to trick you. Watch the movie or not . . . just don't be so immature and post worthless comments. |

It is a good movie, but definitely not as good as other "run from catastrophe" thrillers. For once, I found it hard to take the decisions they were taking based on the fact that there is really a place to run or who to run from (besides the almost impossible fact that you would have to run from others further and further).
The other thing that bugged me is the constant Shyamalan's tries to scare the crap out of you without much effort to it. C'mon, first crazy people from a scary house shooting kids (ok FINE, they were freaked out about terrorists/virus/aliens/whatever) but then there was the sweet old lady who, you guessed, is crazy as a zombie on ecstasy. I think this movie is more about "be careful not to go too deep into the valleys. You never know how a hill billy will treat you" then "run from the impossible".
And what is up with the main character? I couldn't find much compassion for both him and his wife. Elliot sounded for most part of the movie as a completely loser husband, and Alma well... I better not say it, but I'm sure everyone was just expecting her to die at some point. Besides that, I think the only people in the entire movie who had brains were the 2 old ladies sitting in their house with gas masks. For all others, they felt like cockroaches running from venom. |

Based on the fact that I didn't like "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs", and the fact that there are better current films I haven't seen, I can understand where Isaac Borgo is coming from. |

Thank you N8urboy. It's not that I feel like M. Night Shyamalan pulled the rug out from under me. I haven't enjoyed a single one of his over hyped, shallow, self indulgent, gimmicky, poorly crafted, rediculous films. Not one, and until this point I had seen them all. I cannot believe he is still making movies after the last few shitbombs. My personal least favorite being "Signs" which not only entailed some of the worst performances that each member of the cast has ever offered the silver screen but also a plot that was fit for a straightjacket. An alien invasion reaffirms a priest's faith in God? WTF? I don't often argue these points with his fans because they tend to be simple minded sheep that are easily thrilled by extremely erroneous plot progressions (twists) and easily contented with near child-like dialogue. Not only do his films not stand up to most of the B films that are currently available they are soaking up valuable production money that could be spent on more thoughful, better made films. I do anything to wind up in a room alone with Shyamalan. Needless to say only one of us would be coming out. No offense meant towards you Felix. I've always enjoyed your reviews, whether or not I agree with them. Take a lesson from that Duty Guy. |

Noted, Isaac. You're more than welcome to your opinion of M. Night, even if I disagree strongly. Much respect. |

Why isn't this movie called "The Occurence"??? Oh that's right... Shyamalan is a pretentious piece of shit. |
