Those of you old enough to remember seeing “Return of the Jedi” in the theater probably also recall the disquieting tremor of uncertainty that slithered down your spine even as you were thrilling to the final movie itself. Feral Mon Chi Chis? - You thought to yourself - Another Death Star? Darth Vader looks like that? Hey, at least we got to see Leia in a bikini. As we can see, Lucas began infantilizing his product all the way back in the Reagan years. I don’t have to revisit the prequels (or the “Special Editions” of the original trilogy) here, but no one will accuse me of hyperbole when I say all of the newer product threw a big wet bantha blanket over our fanboy enthusiasm (for further discussion, please see Brian Posehn’s ‘uncle penis’ analogy). With Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003 Clone Wars series, the upcoming Cartoon Network series, and now “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” he was finally able to turn his franchise into the children’s cartoon he’s wanted ever since he told the “Jedi” production team – with a straight face – he needed to hire a bunch of little people to play barbaric teddy bears. “SW:TCW” is supposedly designed to be an intro to the upcoming TV series. As such, it’s an almost entirely pointless exercise. For starters, the events of the film serve as little more than an accessory to the overall Clone Wars plotline. It seems someone has kidnapped Jabba the Hutt’s kid, Rotta the... Huttlet. The Jedi Council, needing safe passage through Hutt-controlled space to battle the separatists, send Anakin Skywalker (Matt Lanter) and his new padawan Ahsoka (Ashley Eckstein, in a shameless attempt to lure the tween girl crowd over to the dark side) and a squad of clone troopers to rescue the kid. The separatists, led by Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), have similar plans, leading to a showdown between the two Jedi, Dooku and his apprentice Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and plenty of cannon fodder droids and clones. Shades of Skorzeny rescuing Mussolini, yes? Okay, maybe not, but even if the plot isn’t all that galvanizing, it would be perfectly serviceable as a foreword to a narrative about the war itself if not for the way Lucas and company continue to drizzle urine over any lingering goodwill fans of the franchise might still possess. The animation is lifeless (especially after Tartakovsky’s efforts), the voice acting stiff (though Lanter actually gets Anakin through the whole movie with nary a whine), but it’s the new characters that really screw the pooch. Not only are we treated to the nauseatingly precious Rotta (he farts!) and ‘Padawana Montana’ (unlike the heavily armored Anakin, Obi-Wan, and assorted troops, Ahsoka marches into battle in a tube top/miniskirt combo), but we’re also introduced to Jabba’s uncle, “Ziro” the Hutt. I might have been able to overlook asinine bullshit like Ahsoka calling Anakin “Sky Guy” or his referring to her as “Snips” in return, but Ziro is an abomination. My complaint isn’t that he speaks English (the horror), but that he’s basically Jar Jar in Hutt form, albeit deliberately effeminate in manner and talking like a cross between Truman Capote and Hoodoo from “Lidsville.” The whole thing feels like a continuation of Lucas’ experiments to see how much shit his dwindling supporters will take before finally saying “enough” and moving on to adult pursuits. I should know. I’m not going to lie and say my anti-Lucas gland kicked into gear way back in ’83. No, it took “The Phantom Menace” to get those juices flowing freely. There are still plenty of “Star Wars” fans out there, however, and now that he’s truly super-duper rich, Lucas’ only source of amusement seems to be in devising new methods to drive them off in disgust. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” will go a long way in helping his cause.

Star Wars, The Clones Wars..Being an innovator you art and craft are often misunderstood as such is the case for George Lucas and Dave Filoni..
Clone Wars was a fun, wonderful, and entertaining family Star Wars film.. The Clone Wars was actually better in some respects than its predecessors. The cinematic and artistic style of the cinematography of Clone Wars are Avant-garde, for a new Generation of Star Wars Fans..
In the US anyone over 30 will dismiss a animated feature as a cartoon..If you hold Clone Wars up against other animated features it is new and amazing..if you hold it up against Sci Fi features it is amazing, if you hold it up against itself, Star Wars, it holds its own with the Saga..
The Clone Wars is the vanguard for the next generation of Star Wars features for next generation of Star Wars and Sci Fi fans. The Clone Wars TV Series, and Star Wars, The Force Unleashed are the first steps into a much larger new world next generation of media at the movies, television, internet, game console platforms, and dvd and downloads.. |

Man, I don't know if people just want the old Star Wars, or if this movie simply sucks. I'm not meaning that as a jab at you, Pete, I'm just in a little bit of denial that Lucas is so intent (intentional or not) on ruining anything involved with the "Star Wars" title. I have to say the clips haven't filled me with optimism, but I never expected such scathing reviews all across the boards. I guess I'm still holding out hope that there can be some great left in this series beyond video games, and fan fiction. Sigh. |

If you didn't get in '83 that Star Wars was a kid's movie, with populist era film stylings, then why are you still pining for 50's to 70's era introspection now. This is a typical review from those that STILL don't get it. The only thing you might say about this debut is it should have been on television where it would maybe have had a bigger small-screen impact. The style and pace of the movies are there, just streamlined for a different medium and audience. Where movies have been about about different audience sectors and are now TRYING to attain a populist diffentiation from television, 500 channel television is ALWAYS about specific audience. Star Wars is simply adapting to that new medium and specific audience. Along the way, there's still some exploration of Lucas' universe for those fans who care to stick with it, other than the other whiners and piners with the usual complaints - it's not the first film, it's not EMPIRE, it's not MY IDEA. |

I was kinda expecting this rating when I clicked on the review, so as your words. I haven't watch the movie yet but from the previews, I was expecting exactly what you said, and from the small intro you gave me I'm now sure on what this movie is about. Rather then give us some hard core Jedi battle along some more mature plots and drama, Lucas is trying to push, yet again, kids into the lightsaber madness. Clone Wars cartoon was a great show. No question about it. But it was great for one factor: It pushed the jedi effect to a whole new level. But throwing us another Jar Jar... Oh please. Enough with the kids crap! I ask you Lucas: Doesn't your maid's dog have a porche yet? Is that it? |

I don't see a point in arguing whether or not the Star Wars films are "for kids" or not. You could easily argue they always have been "for kids" as they appeal directly to the imagination (imagination being something we as a society shamefully condemn as merely a youthful quality). Even if the new Star Wars installments are "for kids", don't kids deserve something better than these piss-poor, bombastic trists? If Lucas wants to believe children are naturally idiotic that's fine. It doesn't excuse how simply awful these new films are. |

This is precisely what I expected the minute the trailer for this abomination hit the screens. I just don't know why he continues to do it, is it just about the money? Why does he have to wedge in another charachter (Jabba) from the OT? Why can't he do anything deep or new? Everything in this heap of shit looks like a rehash from the prequels, which we've already established was rubbish. I just can't believe that Lucas is so artistically bankrupt that he's just aiming for cheap cash ins...I just don't get it. |

Because Lucas's films don't match the adventures you had running round your mom's yard going pewpewpew, he surely deserves your scorn. |

Nah Lucas deserves scorn cause he has virtually limitless production power and he's too big of an asshole to let GOOD screenwriter write and GOOD directors direct his totally pathetic idiotic films. |

Plenty of films (my personal favorite is "The Incredibles") were great fare for both kids and adults, so we know it can be done. Lucas, while a great technical director with the CGI (though he overdoes it to a staggering degree), completely fails at dialogue and directing real actors. He apparently surrounds himself with yes-men, and the results are obvious: spectacle films that sorely lack soul. I recommend the graphic novels of the SW universe, which have made up for the lousy films of the past decade. |

Paviv has it right on the money there. The Incredibles is a great example. Writer/Directors like Brad Bird have no problem creating movies that are as smart as they are fun and still appeal to both adults and children alike. It's not really a question of whether or not Star Wars is "for kids" it's whether or not it's good filmmaking. It's not. Not anymore. |
