Scorcese has made one of his best and most personal films. "Kundun" is the story of the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, from the time he is discovered, as a child, to early adulthood when he is forced to flee his country or be killed by invading Chinese nationalists. The film is shot (almost) entirely in English, but Disney isn't exactly going to pay $30 million for a movie in Tibetan. At least everyone doesn't have New York accents like some other religious historical drama Marty did (AHEM). "Kundun" is also mercifully free of white teachers or saviors, such as, oh, say, Brad Pitt? One of the ten best of the year.
