NEW FILMS INTERNATIONAL PICKS UP “GRAND THEFT PARSONS”
Sundance 2004 official selection Grand Theft Parsons has been acquired by New Films International for worldwide distribution. The film, starring Christina Applegate and Johnny Knoxville, is a comedy/drama that chronicles the wild but true adventure of what happened to the body of country-rock legend Gram Parsons following his death. When Parsons died in 1973 his road manager Phil Kaufman (Knoxville) fulfilled a promise to cremate the singer. But to do so, Kaufman took off in a borrowed hearse with Parsons body in the back, and the police along with Parson’s family chasing close behind. Now on the lam, Kaufman made it all the way to Joshua Tree National Park before being arrested and pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft. Produced by Frank Mannion (“Osama,” “Mad Cows”) and directed by David Caffrey (“On the Nose,” “Bolt”).
