JOHNNIE TO TRIBUTE IN LOS ANGELES
The American Cinematheque presents HONG KONG HERO: A TRIBUTE TO DIRECTOR JOHNNIE TO at the Egyptian (June 3 – 5) and Aero (June 17 – 19) Theatres. Johnnie To is best known for his tough, violent cop and gangster movies (RUNNING OUT OF TIME, THE MISSION), but he has also directed an impressive range of films in other genres, including martial arts fantasies, melodramas, and ironic, anti-sentimental dramas and comedies. The retrospective is highlighted by the Los Angeles Premiere of BREAKING NEWS (2004), which was an official selection of the 2004 Toronto Film Festival. (This screening will take place only at the Egyptian). The series also includes the Los Angeles Premiere of the documentary HONG KONG CINEMA (2004), a look at contemporary Hong Kong cinema directed by Postif journalists Hubert Niogret and Lorenzo Codelli.
