JOHNNY DEPP! PETER WEIR! ERIC ROTH! OH MY!

Peter Weir is set to direct Johnny Depp in “Shantaram” for Warner Bros. The film seems to be a step in the direction of Weir’s earlier politically slanted films like “Gallipoli” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.” “Shantaram” tell the tale of an Australian heroin addict (Depp) who escapes from prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in Bombay. Then, in an attempt to get medical care for his patients, becomes involved in gun running, smuggling and counterfeiting. Woo hoo! The film is being written by superstar screenwriter Eric Roth (“Munich,” “Ali,” “The Horse Whisperer” heh heh) and hopes to go into production next year. Read the full story at Variety>>>
