“CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST” TRAILER PULLED

The Charles Theater in Baltimore is an independently owned and operated five screen arthouse who really support the local film community. Every city should have a Charles Theater. According to our source in Baltimore, the trailer for “Cannibal Holocaust” started running in front of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Saturday, August 4th, but was pulled the following Monday. Apparently several people complained to the management about the trailer, so the theater decided not to run it anymore. The Charles did, however, show it in front of a screening of “Toxic Avenger 4″ on Saturday, August 18th, and received no complaints. Hmmm…
The good news is that “Cannibal Holocaust will show as part of a screening series sponsored by The Maryland Film Festival at 11:00 PM – August 31st, September 1st, 2nd, 7th, and 8th at The Charles Theater located at 1711 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD.
In case you didn’t know, twenty years before The Blair Witch Project there was “Cannibal Holocaust,” the story of four documentary filmmakers who went into the Amazon jungle to film a documentary and were never heard from again. Anthropologist Harold Monroe heads into the jungle in search of clues to the filmmakers’ fate and finds their filmed footage, which reveals their fate.
Originally filmed in 1979, “Cannibal Holocaust” was censored and banned in many countries upon its original release. Director Ruggero Deodato faced several obscenity trials and jail time in his home country of Italy, where the film was also banned. The film has been rarely seen because of its controversial nature and has been generally only available on poor quality, sometimes edited videotape bootlegs.
Now, through Grindhouse Releasing, a brand new print, fully restored and remastered from the negative, has been made available. The Maryland Film Festival will present “Cannibal Holocaust” for five showings only at the Charles Theater. The film is unrated, but contains sex, nudity, graphic violence, and gore. No one under 17 will be admitted. (Not recommended for the squeamish over 17 either.)
