L.A. filmmaker Evan Mather was awarded Best Animated Short Film for his digitally animated Fansom the Lizard at Seattle’s 1 Reel Film Festival.
Screening the duration of the Labor Day festival, Evan Mather accepted the award Monday in an afternoon ceremony during the Bumbershoot arts festival at Seattle Center. Amusing and uplifting at the same time, Fansom the Lizard was lauded for its original story line, hand-drawn and computer generated images, and trip-hop musical score.
Created on a Macintosh using Adobe After Effects and Adobe Illustrator, Fansom the Lizard documents the journey of pet lizard Fansom, whose reality and vantage point come to life due to his young keeper’s limited understanding of life and loss. Based on a true story, Fansom the Lizard explores childhood innocence juxtaposed against darker aspects of adult existence.
“1 Reel Film festival is proud to award Evan Mather with the Best Animated Short Film award for Fansom the Lizard,†said Warren Etheridge, curator, 1 Reel Film Festival. “Evan Mather’s Fansom the Lizard is animation that entertains and evolves the medium.â€
“I am extremely honored to be recognized in front my peers at Bumbershoot,†said Evan Mather. “To be awarded Best Animated Short Film for Fansom the Lizard is the highpoint for me this year, given the caliber of films here and the prestige of the 1 Reel Film Festival.â€
Evan Mather’s most popular films including Quentin Tarantino’s Star Wars, Airplane Glue, Vert and Buena Vista Fight Club have been featured at dozens of international film festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam (1999, 2001), SXSW (Austin, 2001), FIFI (Lille, France; 2000, 2001), Holland Animation Film Festival (Utrecht, 2001), Tough Eye (Turku, Finland, 2001), MicroCineFest (Baltimore, 1998, 2000), and Northwest Film and Video Festival (Portland, 2000). Next projects include a music video and an original animated feature film.
