Here’s a bright and funny Irish comedy without any subtext whatsoever. Kate Hudson dons the accent to play one of three sisters (the other two are played by an Australian, Frances O’Connor, and the authentically Irish Charlotte Bradley) who all fall for the charms of one handsome young man(Stuart Townsend).
The idea is a good one — think “The Talented Mr. Ripley” without the murderous bits — but writer-director Gerard Stembridge never deals with the complex ideas gurgling under the story’s surface, nor does he make the characters any more than mere cyphers. Sure it’s entertaining and often wickedly funny, but that’s not nearly enough.
