Synopsis: WORLD PREMIERE – Explosively tracing the story of a group of underground hip-hop MC’s from the mid 1980′s to present day, THE ART OF RHYME is a documentary film that explores the original African-American form of story telling: Rap. From southern Gospel preachers to Jamaican toasters; neighborhood park jams where DJ’s rock doubles of breaks; rhyme ciphers in Washington Square Park; to archived battles at the now famous Lyricist Lounge open mike in New York City, the film provides an authentic look into the life, music, and culture of hip-hop in America today.
Filmed over the course of more than 7 years, THE ART OF RHYME follows the living art of some of the best known, as well as unknown hip-hop MC’s ever to bless the mic. As they improvise poetry out of a mix of language, politics and culture that make up their lives, these artists reveal the revolutionary world of inner city parks and community centers that gave birth to the hip-hop phenomenon.
As real people in the community, they touch our hearts and expand our minds; destroying the played out gangster rap image by showing us a real humanity that has attracted both the world’s respect and dollars.
