The movie poster for this one says – If you were thrilled by the “Towering Inferno”, if you were terrified by “Earthquake”, then you will be scared shitless by the Samuel L. Bronkowitz production of “That’s Armageddon”. I guess it all depends on what kind of person you are, but to me, a movie about the entire world going Richter is a pure laugh riot!
The title certainly doesn’t lie. This is pure Armageddon. Story takes a backseat to rampant violence as the entire planet just up and decides to go completely bananas. Buildings burn, dams crumble, prisons bust wide open, riots break out and that just gets things rolling. It’s like a live action videogame that doesn’t slow down for a second, not even for scenes featuring George Lazenby as an architect who we join occasionally as he wanders about a city on fire, shaking his head at the madness and babbling nonsense to himself. He’s actually a lot like the reporter in the “Incredible Hulk” TV show – completely useless and absolutely hilarious. Also, be on the lookout for Donald Sutherland as the clumsy waiter.
All this film needed was Godzilla running amok and it would be my favorite film of all time, but even without, “That’s Armageddon” is still pretty high on my list. Right up there with “Krull”.
