Chick flick alert! Yeah, love can and often does suck, big friggin’ deal! But if I’m going to watch a film detailing the many ways that it does suck, I’m hoping for something with a little creativity, something with edge. I knew I was going into a chick flick when seeing this film, but I figured that something with a title like “Amy’s Orgasm” might have a little bite. Well, the only bite that I got was old man boredom chewing on my ass as I endured one of the most plain, unimaginative romantic comedies I’ve ever seen. And I use the word “comedy” lightly, cuz I sure wasn’t laughing.
Giving up on love at 28, Amy writes a best-selling self-help book that tells women that they don’t need men to be happy. The book transforms Amy into an instant celebrity, but it’s during an interview she does with shock jock Matthew Starr that she realizes that her book is a lie. The two fall for each other and we get to see Amy nervously dip her feet into the relationship pool before diving all the way in. It’s these cute moments of unease that I imagine are supposed to tickle the audience’s funny bone, but I couldn’t find anything funny in the situation at all. It’s just too plain. An unlikely couple gets together and falls in love…hoorah. That’s about as edgy as this film gets. The rest is just so cutesy as these two date each other that you might want to puke in your popcorn bucket.
And of course, things start going awry and the two split up, both longing for the love they once had and then…well, I don’t need to tell you how this thing wraps up. It’s just so by-the-numbers predictable.
Perhaps “Amy’s Orgasm” will strike a chord with people having mid-life love crises. Maybe for them, this film will stand as a sign that love is out there and it will prevail. As any other type of audience goes, I don’t think they’ll find that this love works.
