LYING NEXT TO LARRY

Lying Next to Larry retells a story familiar to anyone who grew up in Sunday schools or reading “Chicken Soup” books. Two men are lying in a hospital room. They don’t know each other. The one furthest from the window either can’t see or can’t move (in this version, the patient is paralyzed) and wants desperately to see out. The other man, the one closest to the window, spends his days describing what he can see through the glass. I won’t give away the ending but the moral is clear: there’s always a better way to look at things, whether it be your health issues, your relationships, or your life as a whole.
Writer/Director Justin Franklin has made a capable film with a strong production value. His two protagonists, played by John Byford and Kent Kasper, play their respective roles well. And the original score, created by Voxhaul Broadcast, an Orange County band who recently toured with The Airborne Toxic Event, compliments the director’s intent. And while the story has been told before, this production shows talent from all involved.
