“The Youth in Us” is a clever bait-and-switch short that becomes more tragic as it reveals its true scenario. Lucas Haas and Kelli Garner give strong performances as, while in bed together, Haas’s character describes a disturbing memory of his past. Actor and documentarian Joshua Leonard makes his promising, graceful narrative directing debut with a piece that slowly reveals its deep sadness.
