I’ve been married enough times to know that weddings suuuuuuuuuuck! The events themselves, anyways. They often bring out the worst in people, while putting everyone else involved in uncomfortable situations. “Piece of Cake” illustrates this beautifully while softening the blow of some of the more tragic events with laughs. Ain’t nothin’ like laughs to wipe away the tears.

So, yes, a wedding is the main event here in “Piece of Cake” and this short focuses mainly on three individuals, all positioned at different stations of wedding preparation, all with their own personal problems. There’s the brother of the bride whose been placed in charge of organizing the bachelor party of her husband-to-be – not a bad station at all, except that he’s a total straight laced nerd who’s probably never been on a date and is generally uncomfortable around other people; not the kind of person you want in charge of the strippers and cocaine. There’s the wedding planner who’s doctor has informed her that her baby is due right on the day of the wedding. And there’s one of the bride’s maids who’s having trouble losing the desired weight in order for her to feel comfortable at the event. It’s wedding trainwreckery at it’s most stressful and it’s absolutely hilarious!

Writer and director Jennifer West does an uncanny job of capturing pre-wedding day mayhem and her cast does an amazing job of bringing the film to life. Many will recognize “The Daily Show”’s Mo Rocca as the nerdy brother, while all will be charmed by performances from Alison Britt as the weight conscious bride’s maid and Jen Graham as the lovely and delirious bridezilla.

A piece of cake weddings are not, but a slice of heaven this film is.
