American Pie’s Jason Biggs teams up with Mena Suvari from American Beauty for basically, “American Pie Goes to College.” Likable guy Paul Tannek (Jason Biggs) is from a small town and he’s about to leave on a scholarship to a college in the big city. It’s pretty easy to tell that Paul is a loser. I mean, his dad is played by Dan Aykroyd. Paul is a super nice guy, which also makes him a great victim. New York presents its share of challenges to Paul, including a trio of annoying roommates. These three jerks are the most obnoxious roommates in the history of movies and I don’t mean that as a compliment. They’re not fun in a “love to hate” way. I mean, these assholes use roofies to drug woman so they can have sex. It’s not funny, it’s actually offensive. Wacky rape jokes just didn’t seem to cut it with the audience I saw it with. I’ve never wanted to inflict violence more on fictional movie characters ever!
Paul soon meets Dora Diamond (Mena Suvari), which sounds a lot like a made up movie name if I ever heard one. The two share cute moments together, you know, in a romantic way. She teaches him to dress hipper and shows him New York. He cuts a mucous-covered kitten from its embryonic sac. It’s not even gross funny, it’s just plain gross. The only problem is that Dora’s sleeping with her college professor played by Greg Kinnear. But she doesn’t realize that he treats her like crap and the scenes between the two are squirm inducing. Are college chicks today this moronic?
I forgive Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari, but writer/director Amy Heckerling gets a failing grade for one of the worst movies about young people this year. She should change her name to “Hackerling”, I mean, she did make “Look Who’s Talking” and “Look Who’s Talking Too.”)
Loser is being marketed as a comedy with big laughs and nothing could be further from the truth. I think that Loser is going to give Battlefield Earth a run for its money as perhaps the summer’s worst movie.
